Westerfolds parkrun #54 – our 1st anniversary

Onesies, flannelette, long and short pyjama bottoms, oversized t-shirts, carefully coordinated or just thrown together - we had a fantastic range of pyjamas on show at Westerfolds Park as we celebrated the first birthday of Westerfolds parkrun!

Our anniversary celebrations kicked off with some statistics: Did you know we've had 766 individual registered parkrunners visit us? And that we've completed 1.15 laps of Australia if all our Westerfolds parkrun kilometers are combined? We also had few presentations to acknowledge some fantastic performances over the past year: Narelle Lakey (14) and Brett Delton (13) collected the most PBs, while Nicola Connelly (12:06) and Paul Lovell (8:50) made the greatest improvements to their parkrun times.

As you know, we wouldn't have parkrun if it weren't for the individuals who fill our volunteer roles each week. While we ask that each parkrunner volunteers three times each year, many of our parkrunners volunteer more often to help fill the roster each week, and often at short notice! Two parkrunners who volunteered very often during our first year were Karen Trickett (20) and Amanda O'Reilly (10), with Amanda often taking up the difficult role of waking up extra early (and arriving at Westerfolds Park in the dark over winter) to set up our course!

Finally we presented the top three of the women's and men's points competition with their parkrun medals! Congratulations to Amanda O'Reilly (3538), Valerie Lowe (3351) and Cecilia Azcurra (3263), and to Ehuli Litaba (4193), Brett Delton (4161) and Michael Miriklis (3427). Ehuli also earned a special mention for not only being one of the parkrunners at our first event, but also for being one of the few who attended the pre-launch trial-runs!

(L-R): Cecilia, Amanda & Valerie

(L-R): Ehuli, Brett and Michael

103 parkrunners turned up to demolish the hills (in more ways than one), with assistance from our invaluable volunteers (thank you to Cecilia Azcurra, Lorraine Bradbury, Paul Gale-Baker, Callum Lowe, Ben Nicholson, Chris Richardson and Martin Strandgard) and additional supporters. As we watched the parkrunners return to finish line, we decided that our anniversary parkrun event had a variety of First Finishers, which we summarised below.

First "traditional" finisher: Robert Del Ponte

First pyjamas: Jeremy Watson

First nightie (and first woman): Sonia Veldhoven

First plushie: B2 (with Tim McKinley)

First dressing gown: Ben "gate-jumping" Thomas

First onesie: Stitch (aka Rohan Durrant)

Robert Del Ponte was the "traditional" first finisher. He had apparently arrived with an aim to smash out a PB, and ran 1:13 faster than his previous Westerfolds PB to join the men's sub-17 club, be the First Finisher, and also take the men's 30-34 age category record! Nick Turner returned to Westerfolds Park for his second parkrun and was the second to finish in 18:19 (which was also a PB-smashing performance). Justin Byrne rounded out the top three with his second-fastest run around Westerfolds parkrun (18:29).

Amongst the women, Sonia Veldhoven was the first to arrive in 21:45 - she was also the fastest in a nightie! Natasha Elkington was wearing her performance-enhancing pyjamas when she crossed the line in second position, with a PB time of 23:55! Lauren Nardelli also picked up a PB when she finished third (25:21).

Westerfolds parkrun #54

We had visitors from a range of parkruns: a few neighbours from Diamond Creek and other "locals" (Albert Park, Balyang Sanctuary, Berwick Springs), and some from further afield (Fulham Palace in the UK). We know a lot of visitors to Westerfolds parkrun find our topography a little bit different, but it's interesting to that first finisher Rob only ran our course 2 seconds slower than when he ran at the relatively flat Frog Hollow parkrun last week! We also had 16 First Timers, of which 7 completed their first-ever parkrun - we did reassure them that we don't regularly run in onesies and pyjamas!

parkrunners on the prowl

The festivities didn't end once barcodes were scanned, with many of the parkrunners staying on to catch up with everyone who helped to make the Westerfolds parkrun birthday party a fantastic occasion. We're sure the sausages and cake had nothing to do with the atmosphere, although we did discover the cake had hypnotic powers over many of the junior parkrunners! Thank you to everyone who brought a plate to share, it certainly made catering our birthday party very easy!

We doubt anyone would disagree with Event Director Scott Trickett making the first cut of the cake into The Hill!

Make sure you check out all the photos Chris took for us on our Facebook page (and you don't need a Facebook account to see them). You can also follow us on Twitter!

Next week will be the announcement of the parkrunner of the month for October, which now includes the presentation of a Suncorp runPositive parkrunner of the month singlet. Also, our neighbours from the other side of the Yarra, Diamond Creek, will be having their own anniversary festivities the following week on November 9th!

Make sure you say hello to Ben and Nikki when you next visit Diamond Creek parkrun!

Happy birthday and happy parkrunning!
