Sale parkrun #93 – 21st January 2017

Sale parkrun #93 - 21st January 2017

What a fantastic morning it was for the penultimate January parkrun!  133 finishers, 18 registered first timers (and probably half as many again who weren't registered) and lots of families enjoying perfect conditions by the lake.

We also had a blushing Bride to Be in Stephanie Bullen, and Dusty the Dog of Honour!  Goodluck for your wedding Steph from all your friends at Sale parkrun and we look forward to seeing you again soon with an updated 'Mrs' barcode....

Congratulations to Jo McCubbin who celebrated her 50th parkrun - welcome to the club, Jo!

With a bumper field, our key box was filled to capacity and there was such a buzz around the Soundshell!  So much so that it was hard to hear the 'beep' of the barcode scanner at times.  Please, if you had your barcode scanned but can't see your name in the results send us a message.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers and to those who put their names down for the weeks ahead.  Do check out the wonderful photos from Allister Berryman and Sarah O'Brien. Thinking of helping out?  Check out the future volunteer roster to see where the gaps are.  I won't be there this week as I'm off to Churchill to help celebrate their 1st birthday.  Instead I'll leave you in the very capable hands of Antho to help start your weekend in the best way possible!  Have a great week and don't forget - if you like what we do, tell your friends :) ~ RD Glenn

Sale parkrun #91

Sale parkrun Event number 91 - 7th January 2017

I'm not sure whether it was the relatively mild conditions before a predicted scorcher of a weekend, or the extra encouragement of our volunteer photographer Chris, but there were plenty of big smiles and some extraordinary jumps around the track this Saturday!

This week Nelly Coomber celebrated 50 parkruns! Congratulations and well done Nelly! Here's to many more parkruns!

We also awarded our "Parkrunner of the Month" for December. Noella Foster is a regular and is always encouraging around the course. Noella regularly volunteers as our photographer and is great at catching all the fun we have. Good on you Noella, we love your contribution!

In amongst our regulars, we welcomed half a dozen visitors to Sale parkrun and five first timers this weekend. We hope you loved it and hope to see you back again.

Parkrun fun wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers each week. Thank you to this weeks' awesome volunteers especially, for making my first run director job go smoothly.

The volunteer roster is looking pretty good for the next few weeks except for the photographer slot. How about giving it a try...if you're keen, send a message through to the Sale parkrun website or our facebook page. I look forward to more smiles, high 5's and pb's next week with Karla as RD. Thanks, and don't forget your barcode! Becky

Sale parkrun #89 and #90 – Happy New Year!

Sale parkrun #89 and #90 - 31st December 2016/1st January 2017

Our first double header coincided neatly with the final day of 2016 and the first day of the New Year.  Karla (your RD for the 31/12 run) reported that It was a glorious morning, humidity gone, warm but not hot and not a breath of wind.  Les Williams said he was going to “jog around” as he had a 1500km race the next day, but still managed to be the first to scan his barcode.

Pictured above is Emily Thompson receiving her Junior 10 parkrun certificate.  Note that we are still waiting on Baily Carubia to collect his.  Karla saw a lot of families and juniors running together - always great to see!

There are still quite a few items in our 'lost property' including a blue aluminium drink bottle.  As a “dog person” Karla has kindly donated a water bowl for dogs as they finish - you will find it by the tap to the immediate right of the finish line.

If you're still searching for a New Year's resolution then why not make 'coming to parkrun as often as possible' your number one resolution for 2017!

Next up was the New Years' Day run at the celebration friendly timeslot of 9:30.  A cooler and drizzly morning greeted us and for a short time I wondered if we'd get many people at all joining us.  I need not have worried though as 66 people happily partook and made it a wonderful start to 2017.  Three new pb's were recorded which was notable given the wide range of age groups that they came from - under 10, 35-39 and 55-59.  parkrun truly is for all ages!  It was lovely to welcome a couple of new people to Sale parkrun for the very first time too.

As always, parkrun would NOT be possible without the help of our amazing volunteers.  Thankyou to all those that supported us on our big weekend of parkrunning!  I put the call out on Sunday for some more names on the roster and with the exception of photographers on Jan 14/21/28, we are now fully stocked to the end of January.  Thankyou!  For those wondering, nothing is difficult (even photographer!) and we would love to see each and every one of you have a go at volunteering at least once every couple of months.

A big shoutout to our newest RD - Becky Van Baalen who takes the reigns this week for her first go.  Go easy on her!

See you soon!  Your Sunday NYD RD, Glenn.

Sale parkrun # 86

Sale parkrun Event number 86 - 10th December 2016

It was an overcast, but not unpleasant morning that greeted us for our 86th parkrun.

I always love my gig as RD, and find it especially gratifying when we get to acknowledge a few of our volunteers individually.

Our parkrunner of the month for November was Helen Jones. Helen is just one of our wonderful pram runners that frequent Sale parkrun, with her gorgeous children, Lily and Luke. This week she only had Luke in tow. Helen is a great advocate of Sale parkrun, and if there is a dress up theme...even better :) Thanks Helen for your wonderful contribution, and I'm sorry I won't be there personally to see you reach your 50th parkrun.

Colin Coomber was the random winner of our Pastry and Pieces $10 voucher. Another Sale parkrun participant with his lovely wife Nellie, and their children and grandchildren. Great to see you enjoy your rewards at Pastry and Pieces Colin!

A couple of announcements with regard to our current pool of Run Directors. Last week we farewelled Brad Trease as RD. Thanks Brad for your wonderful support, you have been an invaluable member of our team.

Nigel Coey is basking in the climes of Antarctica until February, and Chris Holmes will be on call with his work during the summer months, but will be on hand when he can.

We would like to welcome Becky Van Baalen to our team. Becky, along with husband Adam, and children, Jessica and Hayden, are regulars to Sale parkrun, and are strong  advocates of parkrun.

On a sad note, we farewell parkrunners, Claire and Phil Telfer, and children Oliver and Ben. They are moving to the Geelong District. Claire was one of our timekeepers on Saturday, and she told me that parkrun " was the best thing I've done for myself in a long time". Good luck to you all.

On a personal note, I would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas. I have family and work commitments that will keep me away from parkrun until 31st January.

Sale parkrun No: 81 5/11/2106

Sale park run  Event number 81  5th November 201687 parkrunners braved the dry but windy conditions on Saturday, with five first timers and 13 PB's, quite an achievement in the 35-40km winds.  Actually we were lucky as winds overnight had been recorded at over 100kph, despite this the course was clear with minimal debris from fallen branches.  Thanks to the volunteers, a day when it might have been more pleasant running!

Br......   IT WAS COLD!!!
Now despite repeated reminders that park run is for everyone, it was great to welcome back Les Williams from the World Athletics Masters in Perth, where he not only represented Australia but he secured 6th place for 800m in the 60-64 age group.  Just getting there was not an easy road for Les with many qualifying events just to be allowed to compete.  His position in the first 10 also gives him a spot in the World Indoor Championships next year.  Les is also contemplating going to the Highland Games in Scotland, possibly to compete in a longer distance event.   Les attributes a lot of his success to parkrun, which gave him the Mojo / Inspiration to pursue running to such a high level.   He even managed a parkrun in Perth, on the day after his race.  OK we won't all make a world championships, but we can all set ourselves realistic goals in our efforts to become healthier children, adults or seniors and thus enable us to enjoy a rewarding and active life for many years to come.

Sale parkrun No 80: 29/10/2106

Sale park run  Event number 80  29th October 2016

A lovely sunny Spring Carnival Day, greeted  93 parkrunners of whom 7 were first timers and we welcomed one visitor from across the ditch NZ accent and all.  Talking of First Timers, a special mention has to go to my all all First Timer Volunteer Team of Lenie, Belinda, Deanna, Allison, Dianne, Ashley and young Sophie.  No one stuffed up and the run went smoothly.

CONCENTRATING  -  You see it's not that hard.

We need a photographer for next week 5th November and a backup times for the 12th, so why not be a First Time Volunteer!  You can enter your name on the Sale parkrun page or just send a message to parkrun Facebook, if you are available.

Although parkrun is about participation and fun the challenge of a PB just gets the blood pumping, and we had fourteen on Saturday, the first three across the line all achieving this.  You don't have to be fast runner to get a PB, you can walk, just a bit faster, add a few paces of a jog, it's "every person against themselves" with lots of support from ones friends

Sale parkrun #76

Sale parkrun #76 - 1st October 2016

With perfect weather and the excitement of AFL Grand Final day in the air, a fantastic morning was had on Saturday with 111 participants taking part.  We welcomed 14 first timers along to parkrun - literally half of which was comprised of the Smith family from Maffra with Mum, Dad, five kids and two dogs making their parkrun debut!  The five kids are pictured running together at the end below.

We also welcomed another two new people to the 50 run club in Sean Wolfe and our very own RD Chris Holmes. As we revealed on the day, in addition to his 50 runs, Chris has also volunteered 13 times - thankyou Chris!

We love our volunteers!  Thankyou to Noella FOSTER, Rachael HENDERSON, Brett MCCARTHY, Sarah O'BRIEN, Jenna ROSS, Les WILLIAMS and Caroline ZACHER who made it all possible this week.  In particular, special thanks to Noella who not only put her hand up at the 11th hour to take photos but brought along a secondary photographer in Jenna.  Check out their handiwork on the Facebook page album.

Did I mention it was AFL Grand Final Day?  Whilst not everyone was as excited by the fact, it was fantastic to see so many people dressing up in their favourite footy or sporting team colours and having some fun even if woolen scarves and footy jumpers didn't make the most ideal running attire.

It was fitting to see Joel Brayshaw cross the line first in not only a smashing PB for him but proudly wearing his Western Bulldogs guernsey - the start of a very good day for supporters of the 'Dogs!

I look forward to seeing you all again this week as I hand the reigns over to Nigel.  What trivia will he have in store for us I wonder??

See you at parkrun!

~RD Glenn

Sale parkrun #74

Sale parkrun Event number 74 17th September 2016

Perfect calm conditions greeted the 103 participants who turned up on the first Saturday of the school holidays at Sale parkrun.

A large contingent of Sale and District Runners were in attendance to help our co Event Director, Glenn Crawford, celebrate his 50th parkrun. Congratulations Glenn on the amazing milestone.

Great to see our RD's having fun out on the course...Nice jumps Brad and Nigel!

While we are all about having fun at parkrun, we do have rules in place that we must abide by to protect all our participants.

One such rule that we strictly want/need to enforce is: Any child under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult, so that means a person over the age of 18. An elder sibling or friend, who is not yet 18 is not acceptable. Please adhere to these rules for the safety of our most precious parkrunners...our very future!

I will hand over the RD reins to Anthony Ingram this week.

Happy holidays to those heading off on holidays this week....maybe an opportunity for some parkrun tourism!

Have a great week everyone.

Bernie

Sale parkrun #71

Sale parkrun #71 - 27th August 2016

Crisp, still air and glorious sunshine created the perfect backdrop for parkrun #71, enjoyed by 106 eager parkrun enthusiasts!  We were pleased to welcome visitors from Traralgon and Churchill parkrun along with 10 newcomers for their first ever parkrun.  The conditions no doubt contributed to the high number of pb's for the morning with 20 people crossing the line earlier than they have ever done before.

We welcomed another inductee into the illustrious 50 club - resident RD Nigel Coey.  Congratulations and welcome!  We also welcomed another two Junior 10 club members in Alana Crawford and Isabel Foat.  Well done girls!

As always, pakrun could not happen without our amazing volunteers.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered this week Joelene BUNTAIN, Mathew GRIFFITH, Rachael HENDERSON, Chris HOLMES (amazing photos!), Jessica VAN BAALEN, Rebecca VAN BAALEN and Andrew YOUNG

One of the things I love about parkrun is the number of families that participate but also the friends that have formed as a result of what is essentially a Saturday morning walk or run in the park.  I like to think that we are all part of one big Sale parkrun family and it's great to see people chatting away to one another before, after and for many of us, during - well maybe less so in that last 1km or so!

Enjoy the rest of the week and I'll see you all back there this Saturday morning for another free dose of fun!  Our multi-talented RD, Chris, will be back at the helm.

Glenn
