Event #25 Be afraid, be very afraid!!!

It was a scary morning to get out of bed and come to Rockingham parkrun this morning, with the Halloween Kids in Control Event #25.  All volunteer positions (except RD and lead cyclist) were filled by some of our junior crew, with a little bit of adult supervision thrown in for safety.

Safety is very important....even for those with no internal organs.

The dress theme for the morning was Halloween, and the local parkrunners did not disappoint, ghouls, skeletons, devils, witches, zombies, even psychopathic medical professionals, you name it, they were there.

The kids did a great job being in charge of the 128 parkrunners that turned up, and are most certainly welcome back to volunteer again (hint, hint).

Event #24 Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head!

It was definitely weather for ducks  for Event #24 on 12th October 2013.  Just after the volunteer briefing, it didn't rain cats and dogs, just bucket loads and bucket loads of water.  Numbers were down, which was lucky, because the warm up was held under the Peace Pavilion, and it was cosy to say the least!

A very cosy warm up session!

So it was 94 very soggy parkrunners taking off from the starting line, with running shoes squishing and squelching. And even though the rain eased off not soon after, the head wind on the return leg did little to dry everyone out!

Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.....

If you go out in the raaaiinn.......

This morning we were joined by numerous junior first timers from the Baldivis Runners Club, who went on to take out all but one of the first three men's and the first three women's placings.

In fact Matthew Ramsden, not only came close to breaking the course record, he actually managed to overtake and then outpace the lead cyclist. Yes, that's right, the lead cyclist came second.......

Man vs machine, Matthew outran the lead cyclist!

Event #19 A Magic Window

So despite some dodgy weather overnight and juuusssst prior to parkrun time, Event #19 ended up with a magic window of weather.  Light rain had ceased by around 7:30am, the sun came out, shined down upon the 81 runners that took part, and made it a perfectly pleasant morning for a PB (unless you had to escort your daughter to a toilet stop......)  But by 9:30am, Garden Island did it's TARDIS thing again (ie it disappeared!), the clouds rolled in and the rain absolutely persisted down.

Once again we had a female first finisher, however the inspirational parkrunner of the morning was Daphne Beckett, who turns 80 in January, and turned in a new PB of 46:33 mins. Just goes to prove that parkrun is for everyone!

Daphne Beckett....nearly 80, but totally awesome!

Event #18 An Election Day Special!

Event #18 dawned calm and clear down at the beach, although there were thunderous rumblings and lightning strikes to be seen out at sea.  Luckily though, the weather remained favourably dry, and far less windy than last week's gale force blusterings.

With 121 the official final count, it was a simple, fun and friendly start to the day, in contrast to the last three years of conniving and manipulations that ultimately ended with today's federal election. In honour of the occasion, the official, two-party preferred, Rockingham parkrun ballot box was out for one and all to cast their vote in a democratic fashion as to who would ultimately lead the country by the end of the day.

The ballot box

The results

The finish tokens were placed in to either Liberal or Labor slots, and with a final tally of 69 to 52 in favour of the Liberals, it just goes to show that Rocky parkrunners are on the ball when it comes to current events.

But the only results that really mattered were the ones from the field.

Event #17 Where did everybody go???

...and they're off!

Event #17 saw a glorious morning down at the beach, not a cloud in sight, perfect, almost-springtime sunshine bringing a hint of what to expect over the coming months. There were 95 parkrunners out this morning, including 14 first-timers, with 26 new PBs being recorded. For the first time, the first finisher was a female, GOOD JOB Ingrid Cleland!

First Finisher Ingrid looking Fabulous!

Also a BIG SHOUT OUT to young Harrison Maude - eight years old and he came in as 7th finisher overall with a time of 24:42, which is a minute outside of his best time.  He is definitely chasing hot on the heels of his big brother Alex, who is regularly our first-finishing junior and who came in as 4th finisher over all.

GO Harrison!

As always, BIG THANKS to the volunteers that make it happen each week, and to all participants that get out and give it a go.

But where has everybody gone??  Since launching we have consistently seen over 100 parkrunners, (except for Event #2), usually between 120-130 each week.  Could a little event called the City to Surf have anything to do with the drop in numbers this week??

By all accounts, Rockingham parkrun will be fielding many C2S entrants.  Whether you are taking part in the 4km, the 12km or the half marathon, the cheers and well wishes of ALL of the Rockingham parkun community are with you, to take you over the finish line.  Please keep safe and uninjured, although if you should happen to sprain or strain anything, the volunteer roster would love to hear from you!

Oh, and by the way? We've now covered a total distance of more than 10,000km!!! So I think I might go and have a rest now!

Event #16 Show Your Colours

Event #16 was the Show Your Colours Day at Rockingham and other parkruns nationwide.  112 runners turned out in total, with many sporting the colours of their favourite teams.  Rugby, soccer and AFL were the predominant codes, with one almost-banned Collingwood supporter, and one Essendon supporter who was asked to provide a sample to test for performance enhancing drugs.  In the lead up to the federal election, even political "teams" got a bit of a showing.  There were 36 new PBs, and 16 first timers......WELCOME!

Event #15 Bit of a Wet One, but at least it wasn’t cancelled!

So this morning was officially Event #15, and it was the first event that we've had so far where the rain got a little bit serious!  All up, 101 regulars, first timers, and a few tourists braved the weather forecast, setting 20 new PB's for the morning.

The barcode operators were the lucky volunteers, because they got to set up and sit down in the Peace Pavilion out of the rain. The other volunteers were as "hardcore" as the runners.......out in the rain!  Great job guys, well done and thank you!

So despite young Matt Elwell again being the first finisher, we still haven't cracked a new course record.  It currently stands at 16min 11sec, set at Event #2 by an out of towner!  Someone needs to do something about that!!!!

This week also saw a new first female finisher, well done Teresa Carruthers!

DID YOU KNOW????  Since Rocky parkrun started on April 27th, 592 different people have taking part, making a total of 1822 runs, set 590 PBs and running a combined total of 9110km. True story!
