Festive bonus parkruns

There will be no bonus parkruns taking place on either Christmas Day or New years' Day at Rockingham.

Festive Season Rockingham parkrun events

It's that crazy time of year again and everyone wants to know what festive events will be staged over the Christmas/New Year period when we have special permission to conduct extra runs.

As in previous years, there will be no Rockingham parkrun on Christmas Day (however Christmas Eve is a Saturday so parkrun will run as normal).  Also as in previous years, we will be running the New Year's Resolution Run, same time, same place as usual.  Come join us to blow away the hangover and get the New Year off to a cracking start.

Festive Season Update

So here's the scoop Rockingham parkrun peeps!

On Saturday 19th December it will be the annual Running of the Santas - Come dressed in your finest Christmas garb for a festive run, followed by a BYO BBQ breakfast afterwards.

There will not a be a bonus run on Christmas day, but parkrun will run as normal on Boxing Day, so yes, we will need volunteers.!

As has happened in previous years, we will have the Twilight Rundowner at the Rockingham parkrun course on Monday 28th December at 7pm. Be aware that this is just a social run, not an official parkrun event, so no volunteers needed, no timing, just a chance to get out and run off some the excesses of the season with some awesome folks in a beautiful beachside setting.

The NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION RUN will be on again on New Year's Day, to start 2016 off with a fresh start. This is an official parkrun run event, so we will require volunteers as usual, and it will count towards the milestone clubs.  The even better news is that with NYD being on a Friday, you get to come and run AGAIN on Saturday for parkrun as usual! Now that's starting the new year in style!

All Rockingham parkrun events will resume as normal after this.  We will again hold our Aussie Aussie Aussie Run on Saturday 23rd January as we approach our THIRD BIRTHDAY in April.

Event #37 A Real Scorcher

The morning was off to a warm start for Event #37 on the 11th January, but there were many parkrunners undeterred by the scorching weather predicted for the day.  With smiles all round, 133 parkrunners and 13 volunteers still made it to the park on what turned out to be Perth's hottest day in 23 years.  The mercury peaked at 43.3 later in the day, but by then Event #37 was well and truly done and dusted for the day.

Event #36 Oh My God, How Many???

The day dawned clear and bright for Event #36. The first Saturday of 2014, and the crowd was pumping at the start line.

Whether due to the Christmas hiatus' in kids sports, time off taken for the festive period, the initial determination of New Years' resolutions, or a combination of all three, a new attendance record was set.

A massive 183 parkrunners took part in the morning's run, almost setting off a small tsunami with the number of feet thundering along the path!

Aussie Aussie Aussie Run

Get out your green and gold and don the Aussie flag.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

Show your Aussie pride!

Run as a boxing kangaroo, or just as a dedicated Down Under Wonder.

Boxing Kangaroo

It's Australia Day 2014, and the theme for Rockingham parkrun Event #39 on Saturday 25th January will be to show your true blue Aussie colours.

Let's see a tidal wave of Aussie pride rolling along the Rockingham coast.

Event #35 The New Year’s Resolution Run

Happy New Year 2014

Numbers were down on previous weeks, obviously due to a few too many people recovering from the previous night's celebrations.  Despite this, 90 parkrunners and 13 volunteers still congregated for a special New Year's Day production of Rockingham parkrun.  Tania Hollis thoughtfully provided a bucket, just in case there were any parkrunners still suffering, but willing it a go anyway!

New Year's Resolution Run

Those who made it to the start line to welcome 2014.

A good start to the year!

2014 off and running!

A little bit chillier than it has been over the past few events, many people obviously wanted to start 2014 with style (and maybe get an early start on those NY resolutions) with 15 PBs achieved.  Maybe this was because, as luck would have it, despite the community celebrations at the venue the previous night, everybody made it home so there were no cross country hurdles to overcome.  For one family, the weather was still perfect, being on a visit to Perth from their home of Manchester, and rocking their club shirts from their UK parkruns.

The Unofficial, but VERY Popular, Twilight Run 2013

As an unofficial parkrun, and therefore no times, no tokens given out or PBs recorded, it is difficult to say exactly how many people took part in the Twilight Run.  But the turnout exceeded expectations because there were HEEEAAAAAAAPS of Rockingham parkrunners, and a few visitors from other Perth events, down at the beach enjoying a run in the last of the afternoon's rays.

Twilight Run

A quick greeting from the Event Director before heading off.

Safety was a bigger issue than usual, due to the massive increase in regular park users.  Despite this, the event was incident free, although the large crowd of runners moving past did receive some bemused and curious looks from onlookers!

The serious folks timed themselves, and others just enjoyed the atmosphere, the location and the beautiful afternoon.  All in all, everyone had a rather pleasant way to finish the day, particularly those that found their way to a local bar for a few coldies and pizza!!

For those interested, you can log your time as a Freedom Run.  Just go to one of your results emails or the weekly parkrun news.  Look for the link to 'manage your profile' and follow the links from there.  While you're there, you may need to change your home run to Rockingham if you haven't already done so and you were previously registered at Claisebrook Cove prior to Rockingham parkrun launching.

Event #33 Running of the Santas

Off they GoHoHo!!

Off they GoHoHo!!

Well it was certainly a sight to see! There was a multitude of Santa's, Mrs Claus', elves, Santa's helpers and generally Christmas-ified folk lining up to take part in the first Rockingham parkrun Running of the Santas.

See all of the mornings photos on our Facebook page Rockingham parkrun.

Officially there were 154 parkrunners taking part, and by all accounts, a lot of fun was had by all. Luckily, after a heatwave the previous week meant that the temperature at 8am was already pretty warm, the morning was clear, bright and pleasant. No Santa's melted away on their 5km trek along the beach, so if the real one snuck in, he was obviously all good to go on Christmas Eve!

New Year’s Resolution Run

Rockingham parkrun will hold a "BONUS" parkrun, to herald in 2014.

The New Year's Resolution Run will be held on WEDNESDAY 1st January 2014, (I know...a Wednesday, weird huh?) same time, same place, same need for volunteers...OK maybe we could get away with a few less!!!

So chase away the hangover and cobwebs, and get ready to welcome in a brand-spanking-new year at Rockingham parkrun.  Bring the family, the picnic rug and the budgie smugglers, actually maybe not the budgie smuuglers, but definitely bring the sunscreen, cos it's the only WA parkrun at the beach....what better spot to make a day of it?
