Run Townsville 2014

Daniel and Shadow are kitted out for June 1st

You may have noticed some fetching scarlet hats being handed out at Riverway parkrun the last couple of weeks. There is a reason for this! Townsville has joined the list of regional cities hosting Run Australia, a series of fun-run events supported by The Cotton On Foundation from which all registration fees go straight back into the local community's health services. In Townsville's case the money will be put to good use by funding the much-needed redevelopment of the Children's Ward at Townsville Hospital. Riverway parkrun is delighted to be able to help support Run Townsville by encouraging as many of you and your friends to sign up!

Run Townsville will take place at Jezzine Barracks on 1st June with a 7am race start and will feature 12km run and 6km run & walk events. Registrations are now open and there are special rates for family regos and kids under 12. There will also be prizes for top placers from 9:15 and all sorts of festivities at Jezzine Barracks include food vendors, music, children's entertainment and market stalls!

We hope to see lots of you there, why not create a parkrun team when you register?

Riverway’s course is changing!

Yes the rumours are true. With numbers now regularly exceeding 75 runners each week we have sadly outgrown our little meeting point behind the Riverway Arts Centre. As of 29th March 2014 (the First Anniversary to boot!) we will be changing our Start/Finish location and also re-routing parts of our course. The fundamental loop around the river will remain unchanged but the parts of the course close to the start and finish will be quite different. The biggest change is that we will now have all of our course on concrete pathway, with only the Finishing Funnel on grass, meaning we're far more pram/wheelchair friendly! The new base location is also closer to additional car parking facilities.

The new course has been trialled and measured using a metre wheel and is exactly 5.01km

Major changes:

  • Start/finish location moved to beside Tony Ireland Stadium
  • Course briefing will take place on the “Village Green”, beside the cricket pitches and Tony Ireland Stadium (indicated by star on map)
  • Finish funnel to be located on grass to the right of path to reduce path congestion
  • Number of volunteer marshals will be increased to minimum of two
  • All of route is on footpath, no grass crossing except at finishing funnel*

*map below shows route off path due to Garmin GPS inaccuracy

From Green marker:

  1. Run anti-clockwise around cricket pitch turning left at the main swimming pool thoroughfare
  2. Run alongside the swimming pool and take the right-hand path to run alongside the playground towards the Weir State School
  3. Continue past the Weir State School to the Black Weir Bridge
  4. Cross the Black Weir Bridge and run clockwise around the pedestrian roundabout between Mocha Mecca and the Riverside Tavern
  5. Turn off before completing the circle to run past the front of the Riverside Tavern
  6. Continue along the riverside path to the Vickers Bridge
  7. Cross the Vickers Bridge and turn right to run back towards Riverway
  8. Upon reaching the path fork between the Riverway Arts Centre and Itara Apartments (original parkrun meeting-place) bear right to run behind the swimming pool
  9. At the top of the wooden ramp again bear right and continue towards the next meeting of the two main paths
  10. Take a hairpin bend left onto the path back towards the Tony Ireland Stadium
  11. Take the first left to run towards the swimming pool then right and right again to the finish funnel (to the right of red marker)

We appreciate your patience whilst we all get used to the new course, and we hope it serves to make your Saturday morning parkrun even more enjoyable!
