2018 Christmas & New Year’s Day Events

Following on from previous years, Newy will be holding special events on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This year these days fall on a Tuesday, and both events will start at the normal time of 8:00am.

We will only be able to proceed if we get enough volunteers to ensure both events can be managed safely. If you’re interested in volunteering on either event, we are taking volunteers now. Please email newyhelpers@parkrun.com with your barcode number, preferred role and which event you’re nominating for.

Christmas Day is a fun, family-friendly, social event. We encourage you to get into the festive spirit and bring your best carol-singing voice for the 12k's of Christmas and pre-run brief which kicks off at around 7:45am. We welcome regulars, newbies and visitors/tourists.

The special New Year’s Day Event is typically quite popular, with well over 400 finishers last year. Many will be there to show off their non-hangover status and kickstart the year on the right foot… followed by the left. If you're super keen to reach a milestone, you can double-up at The Beaches parkrun which starts at 9.30am.

The rules of delivery that will be enforced globally are:

  • No doubles allowed on Christmas Day (25th December)
  • Doubles allowed on New Year's Day (1st January), but no trebles.

Here’s a list of other local and Australian events are staging extra events:
http://www.parkrun.com.au/special-events/

It will be parkrun as usual on the Saturdays over the Christmas period, so the Newy parkrun event calendar will look like this:

  • Saturday 22nd December
  • Tuesday 25th December (Christmas Day special)
  • Saturday 29th December
  • Tuesday 1st January
  • Saturday 5th January

If you're new to parkrun register here (free).

Christmas Event

Yup! It's on. 8am Christmas Day. :-)

Newy Year’s Day

Come and celebrate Newy Year's Day to the only event in the world that has the day's name in its own name! 8am.

Event #128 – A Neat 500

500 people turned out on a beautiful spring day at Newy. Not a parkrunner more. Not a parkrunner less.

Red seemed to be the colour for the day. There were free red shirts and free red headbands - to get us excited about the upcoming Run Newcastle events. And there were people dressed in red talking up the Red Dress day coming up soon for Aids Awareness Week.

There was even a Red-head as our Run Director for the day.  And of course a few people were inducted into the Club 50 brigade where 'Red Shirts’ are the order of the day - Jane Hamson, Megan Bennett and Karen MacDougal (pictured above with butterfly and flags, alongside other FLASH ladies).  And unbeknown to us - parkrun tourist Dave Mitchell from the UK - who runs at the spiritual home of parkrun in Bushy and also at - would you believe it Nonsuch parkrun (we reckon there’s no such event!!) completed his 200th parkrun. Sorry no shirt for that Dave but a great achievement and thanks for coming all the way to Newy for the occasion.

Thank you to this week's volunteers from ACON who stepped up to help ahead of The Red Dress Run on 22nd November for AIDS awareness week. All parkrunners are encourage to wear, you guessed it, a red dress... or something red at Newy parkrun on the 22nd November.

Thank you to our volunteers this week:

Event #126 – Sunshine & Serpents

Another warm spring day brought out 566 parkrunners to get their weekly fix. When heading towards the half-way point its always interesting to see who is in the lead coming back and how far behind the next parkrunners are.

50 runs

This week it was exciting to see group of four tightly bunched and having a real ding-dong battle going on between - Nick Marriage, Benny Fuller, Celia Sullohern and Hugh Bonney.

Then whether heading towards half-way or coming back after the turnaround another great sight is the long winding "serpent" of people who make up the peleton which seems to stretch on and on for with all manner of coloured clothing and running styles.

This week we gave 50 Club red shirts to good friends Kara Booth and Mim Jones who somehow managed to orchestrate to achieve this feat on the same day (is it true that Kara 'forgot' her barcode last week?) Colleen West was also acknowledged as having recently passed the same milestone.

Event #125 – Run with Robbo

The 125th edition was billed as "Run with Robbo" as we celebrated the 100th parkrun of the so-called "Father of Newy parkrun" and Mayor of the Region of Runners - Dave "Robbo" Robertson. It was great to see so many people wearing headbands and we even got a half-way photo with a few of them.

It was another great day at Newy with numbers down slightly, perhaps due to running of the Fernleigh 15 the next day - but 483 is still a lot of participants for a weekly event!

Event #97 – Pre-NewRun

newy parkrun

Once again, the weather on Friday night appeared to be set up for a wet and soggy Saturday morning. Thankfully, the clouds parted, the rain held off and another great morning ensued at Newy parkrun.

With numbers understandably down on the NewRun weekend, with many runners resting up, a field of 338 runners tackled a wet and muddy course.

Congratulations to all those who competed on Sunday with many runners confronting really challenging conditions to record some fantastic personal results. These varied from sub-3 hour marathons, to 35 min 10k runs to sub-2 hour PBs in the half-marathon to first-time 5 and 10k runners. Well done to all concerned.

Our fastest runner on Saturday, 13 year old Lorcan Redmond (pictured above), ran a remarkable time of 16.18 and competed at the National All-Schools Triathlon championships in Bendigo on Thursday and won Gold! Well done Lorcan.

Also, congratulations to Oliver Dalzell on joining the junior-10 club. A great effort Oliver and one you should be very proud.

Dave Robbo returns as your run director this weekend so welcome him back after his stint on The Tartan Couch with a huge weekend at Newy parkrun 98!

See you all on Saturday.

A big thanks to our Volunteers:

Event #92 – Soggy Saturday

newy parkrun

Moderate showers at 8am didn't deter the 332 parkrunners at Newy. Jim Beisty was offering super high-five energy at the turn around point, bringing Simon White home first for a soggy PB at 17:18.

As the drenched runners and walkers returned the finish line quickly turned into a mosh-pit, but there was no shortage of smiles and cheers (obviously wet conditions agree with many).

To sum up...

newy parkrun

Runnin’ in the rain
I'm runnin’ in the rain
Just runnin’ in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm hap hap happy again
I'm laughing out loud
We’re all runnin’ in the rain
The rain’s soaking my clothes
I’m soak soaked to the bone
Tho’ the stormy clouds chase
Everyone’s still on pace
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I runnin’ down the track
With a happy refrain
Just runnin',
Runnin' in the rain
