2018 Christmas & New Year’s Day Events

Following on from previous years, Newy will be holding special events on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This year these days fall on a Tuesday, and both events will start at the normal time of 8:00am.

We will only be able to proceed if we get enough volunteers to ensure both events can be managed safely. If you’re interested in volunteering on either event, we are taking volunteers now. Please email newyhelpers@parkrun.com with your barcode number, preferred role and which event you’re nominating for.

Christmas Day is a fun, family-friendly, social event. We encourage you to get into the festive spirit and bring your best carol-singing voice for the 12k's of Christmas and pre-run brief which kicks off at around 7:45am. We welcome regulars, newbies and visitors/tourists.

The special New Year’s Day Event is typically quite popular, with well over 400 finishers last year. Many will be there to show off their non-hangover status and kickstart the year on the right foot… followed by the left. If you're super keen to reach a milestone, you can double-up at The Beaches parkrun which starts at 9.30am.

The rules of delivery that will be enforced globally are:

  • No doubles allowed on Christmas Day (25th December)
  • Doubles allowed on New Year's Day (1st January), but no trebles.

Here’s a list of other local and Australian events are staging extra events:
http://www.parkrun.com.au/special-events/

It will be parkrun as usual on the Saturdays over the Christmas period, so the Newy parkrun event calendar will look like this:

  • Saturday 22nd December
  • Tuesday 25th December (Christmas Day special)
  • Saturday 29th December
  • Tuesday 1st January
  • Saturday 5th January

If you're new to parkrun register here (free).

Event #131 – Gold Shirt Spotted!

PIC: The Cochrane family, visiting from Bushy parkrun UK with run directors Maddy Herbert and Nic Marriage.

It was a big weekend of running in the Region of Runners this weekend and consequently numbers were down to 380 (still the largest in the land of 101 parkruns) but Newy lost none of its swagger.  The Beaches parkrun was launched and lots of folk were resting up for Sunday’s 6k and 12k Run Newcastle event.

Several runners achieved red shirt 50 status - our lead runner Benny Fuller in a PB (thanks in no small part to that pacing we were just talking about), Jill Condon - a smiling Strider, Haley Deacon and Trent Bonar (sorry we missed you Trent - we’ll make it up next week!!).

Meg Bailey became our first runner to complete 100 (of her 101 parkruns) at Newy and in honour of our new Lord Major became the first person to achieve Newy-tali status.

And one more first …. Steve Cochrane, who hails from the spiritual home of parkrunning at Bushy in the UK, became the first person ever to show up at Newy in the rare 250 shirt … this was his 272nd barcoded outing. He runs with the Stragglers but that he is not … in the VM50-54 age category clocking up a smart 20:39.

It was great to see lots of our parkrunnners extending themselves by stepping up to longer distances at Run Newcastle on Sundy. It was also nice that some of those who ended up on the podium on Sunday - took the opportunity to pace friends to PBs (I’m talking about Vlad Shatrov, Celia Sullohern and Nick Marriage).

PIC RIGHT: Congrats Jill on your 50 club membership!

See you all in Summer - and remember keep hydrated and put your hand up for volunteering one week soon.

PIC: Ben Fuller: starting with a red 50 shirt and finishing first with a PB!

Event #130 – AD 100 not out!

^ Doddy and Meg Bailey all smiles after completing their century!

Once again the colour ‘red' was the order of the day - though this time there were a few blokes wearing red dresses! It was “The Red Dress Run” - to raise awareness of the efforts to end HIV transmission in NSW by the end of decade.

A great festive atmosphere prevailed with some very enthusiastic volunteers and participants. There were even visitors from Holland!

Virginia Hardyman was acknowledged for her recent 50th (there we go … red again) though she was actually volunteer time-keeper for the day ….. how we love our volunteers (Hint! Hint! Please volunteer soon - it's easy and fun!! newyhelpers@parkrun.com).

Meg Bailey and Andrew Dodd clocked up their 100th parkrun each and were both there for the very first parkrun at Newy way back when. Just for the heck of it Doddy wore 11 different shirts over the 5km course represent various running clubs and events in and around “The Region of Runners”.

Talking of centuries last week the 100th parkrun in Australia was launched at Calamvale in Brisbane.  Start planning your parkrun tourism itinerary now by checking out the sensational video that showcases them all.

Event #129 – Totes Naked!

Balloons. Ribbons. Cards. Big smiles.

There must have been something special going on at Newy parkrun edition #129.  And it wasn’t just the 547 participants.

The purple FLASH ladies, often towards the back of the pack, with big smiles and big hearts always brighten up the faces and the attitudes of the parkrunnners around them. Flash. Ladies. Active. Strong. Healthier - and always with lots of purple and often with great backstories of determination in overcoming difficult situations and getting on top of weight loss with a healthy lifestyle which includes a weekly does of Saturday morning barcoding.

One of their own, Tracy Edwards, was joining the Red Club 50 brigade - but unbeknown to her and everyone else she was also announced as the inaugural Suncorp Bank parkrunner of the month winner.  This brought more than one tear to the eye.  Tracy has walked, run, paced, volunteered, encouraged and knocked more than 15 minutes off her PB. And to top it all off, the 80 year old, high-fiving Godfather of Running in Newcastle, gentleman Jim Beisty, and his good wife Sue gave Tracy a personalised congratulatory card …. and he almost kept up with her the whole way round Throsby Creek!

Adele Martin (a Regionnaire and an International parkrunner to boot) and Nick Marriage (the only parkrunner in the world with the surname of Marriage who has been the first finisher in an event, then quickly changed into a suit and had his girlfriend - only 3 minutes behind - accept a finish line Marriage/marriage proposal) were applauded for their 50th. Nick has also been the first finisher in 8 different parkruns with a PB of 16:37 - and loves Wooting.

To cap off the celebrations - on the day that parkrun Australia launched its 100th event at Calamvale (Brisbane) Lauretta Mellows got the three balloon salute for becoming a Black Shirt 100 Club Member. Lauretta loves Newy so much that she bought a place on course … right where one of those old woolsheds used to stand.

Event #128 – A Neat 500

500 people turned out on a beautiful spring day at Newy. Not a parkrunner more. Not a parkrunner less.

Red seemed to be the colour for the day. There were free red shirts and free red headbands - to get us excited about the upcoming Run Newcastle events. And there were people dressed in red talking up the Red Dress day coming up soon for Aids Awareness Week.

There was even a Red-head as our Run Director for the day.  And of course a few people were inducted into the Club 50 brigade where 'Red Shirts’ are the order of the day - Jane Hamson, Megan Bennett and Karen MacDougal (pictured above with butterfly and flags, alongside other FLASH ladies).  And unbeknown to us - parkrun tourist Dave Mitchell from the UK - who runs at the spiritual home of parkrun in Bushy and also at - would you believe it Nonsuch parkrun (we reckon there’s no such event!!) completed his 200th parkrun. Sorry no shirt for that Dave but a great achievement and thanks for coming all the way to Newy for the occasion.

Thank you to this week's volunteers from ACON who stepped up to help ahead of The Red Dress Run on 22nd November for AIDS awareness week. All parkrunners are encourage to wear, you guessed it, a red dress... or something red at Newy parkrun on the 22nd November.

Thank you to our volunteers this week:
