#191 Mullum Mullum parkrun report (15/5/21)

This week's report courtesy of Stephen D.

After a very wet Friday night and 50-50 dry/wet forecast, all eyes were on the weather apps this morning to see what the radar was showing! For those that made the decision to head out the door it turned out to be lovely weather for an autumn parkrun with the sun coming out at times too and thankfully no rain to bother us.

As I drove to Mullum Mullum parkrun this morning I stopped at the traffic lights at the Springvale Rd/Whitehorse Rd intersection. Crossing the road I saw a man running, pushing a pram who caught my eye with his brightly coloured sneakers.  I wondered if he was heading to parkrun. "No, too far away. He wouldn't make it there in time." I thought.  Later, lo and behold as I made my way to the parkrun start line I saw him near the front and off he went! Not only had he covered the distance but he finished in fourth place pushing that pram and no doubt ran back home too! Congratulations Simon Hasell on a very impressive morning's run!

Thank you once again to Bram Cassidy for bringing his broom and giving the path near the finish line area a sweep before our event. Often the gravel can wash down after heavy rain and Bram, with no-one ever asking, often sweeps the area of debris to help keep the path clear for users. It's much appreciated as always!

This week 132 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 5 were first timers and 16 recorded new Personal Bests.

Participants doing their first parkrun ever included:

  • Liam Pain
  • Toby Scholes

Representatives of 17 different clubs took part.

Louise McCall achived the highest age grade performance this morning with 72.16%.  Julian Harris got a 69.82% age grade and finished 1st across the line followed by James Taranto with a 68.80% age grade in second place time-wise. Congratulations to all on their great personal achievements!

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Mullum Mullum parkrun Results Page.

National volunteers week

It's National Volunteers Week from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd May 2021! We'd like to pay special tribute to all the volunteers to have allowed Mullum Mullum parkrun to keep running. We simply wouldn't have a parkrun without our treasured volunteers!

Thank you all for your valued time and effort!

Please see below on how you can help us continue to operate by being a volunteer in future weeks.

Volunteers

Thanks again to those parkrunners that volunteered this week. We need more due the changes as a result of the impact of COVID-!9. All our scanners and the timer are required to use the updated parkrun Virtual Volunteer app on their own phones. It's easy to use and works a lot more smoothly than the older system!

Without the 15 people below helping out we wouldn't have been able to run parkrun this week. Thanks all!

Gary Zuccala • Stephen Day • Francis Kaszmarek • Andrew Lyon • Graham Abrey • Debbi Rother • Kevin Rother • Michelle Barry • Angus Collins • Stephanie Payne • Craig Payne • Monica Payne • Ian Richardson • Mercedes Maaraoui • Zara Kimbel

We have plenty of vacancies that we need to fill for the weeks ahead for volunteers and we'd love to have your help! It's easy, fun and everything is explained. Could you please have a look at the roster online and email us (mullummullum@parkrun.com) if you are interested in one of the best aspects of parkrun!

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning at Mullum Mullum parkrun!

#190 Mullum Mullum parkrun report (8/5/21)

This week's report courtesy of Stephen D.

The weather forecast had the rain holding off till the afternoon and so it was another lovely autumn morning for parkrun. This week 211 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 15 were first timers and 24 recorded new Personal Bests.

Participants doing their first parkrun ever included:

  • Tobias Blackburn
  • Max Frolley
  • Stuart Johnstone
  • Samuel Chee
  • Levi Davies
  • Tamsyn Reyneke
  • Nigel Roper
  • Pramod Kumar Kapani Gowdana Palya Shivaramaiah
  • Sharon O'Keefe
  • Lachlan Scholes
  • Mikky Davies

Representatives of 15 different clubs took part.

There was added excitement on course later during the event when a police helicopter circled  overhead, a police car appeared in the car park and the Run Director got a call from of our marshals that there was also a police car driving down the course! Fortunately it was when we only had some walkers out there and nearing the end! As a courtesy we were able to to warn cyclists heading that way though. Another unpredictable situation highlighting the importance of volunteers and the role they play in allowing our parkrun to operate safely and smoothly!

We heard later the police were looking for a lost teenager with autism. We didn't hear/see from them later (or in the media) so hopefully they were able to find him safe and well.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Mullum Mullum parkrun Results Page.

Milestones

Congratulations to the following people on reaching their special parkrun milestones (and getting a free parkrun t-shirt, white for junior 10, red for 50, black for 100!):

Australian parkrun record? Perhaps not

A couple of weeks ago there was an anomaly with the data for one of our parkrun participants that our Run Directors scratching their heads, looking at data and photos and wondering how an Australian age grade parkrun record had been set! Information luckily came in later in the week explaining a participant had felt unwell (fortunately ok later) and had finished early but had then crossed the finish line, scanned their barcode, etc. Our volunteers are great but are unable to keep track of each participant's movements!

We were able to adjust the results accordingly later but it's a timely opportunity to remind participants:

  • Please only cross the finish line if you have completed the full 5km parkrun.
  • Please only cross the finish line once. If you choose to go back to support others (after you have been scanned), that is great but please peel off/depart the course well the finish line so you don't risk confusing the volunteer timer who it is that is actually finishing/needs a finish token. If running with young kids you can help the timer know how many to actually "count" (ie. are registered with parkrun) as you finish so they don't have to guess or risk counting too many, getting results out of sync.
  • If you finish early (for any reason) please do not cross the finish line, do not collect a finish token, etc. You can leave at any time, during the participation of parkrun and do not need to finish, collect a finish token, be scanned, etc.
  • If you are uncertain or someone with you had accidentally scanned a barcode, etc which may affect results processing please advise the Run Director as soon as possible.

#189 Mullum Mullum parkrun report (1/5/21)

This week's report courtesy of Stephen D.

It was another lovely morning for parkrun today with a great turn out of 198 people who ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 23 were first timers and 19 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 17 different clubs took part.

It got off to an interesting start as the participants headed onto the trail section. One of the regular faster runners, Andew Gosbell, had to go into emergency action mode when his kelpie-cross Maisie (a parkrun pooch featured previously) decided it was the time and location for a stop that only the doggos get away with! Andrew kept his calm as oncoming  participants took a minor but necessary detour and managed a "poop-and-scoop" in record fashion! I know because not only did he do the necessary and appreciated clean up, but still managed to catch up and pass me by the second hill! Kudos to him!

The Alder family ensured they did weekly "(not) parkruns" during the lockdown period last year. Not only did the family keep their fitness but they all seem to have improved their parkrun times at Mullum Mullum, the kids more so than the adults perhaps! So Michael ensured that dad had the final say in the photos as he was passed by his kids this week ;-)

Great too seeing the generations of the Hasell family supporting each other while they kept fit together this morning!

Participants doing their first parkrun ever included:

  • Joel Soh
  • Lachlan Hurren
  • Nicholas Lee
  • Giacomo Nicoletti
  • Shlishta Majumdar
  • Theresa Barry
  • Penny Andrews
  • Sue Crawford

Representatives of 13 different clubs took part.

  • Junior 10 parkrun milestone
    • Olive Mai, 9 at Mullum Mullum
  • 50 parkrun milestone
    • Cameron Weber, with all 50 of them being done at Mullum Mullum and three volunteer efforts!

Well done to all on their terrific achievements!

Scanning tip

A quick tip for participants. After completing your parkrun you can help the scanners (and yourself) make the scanning process faster by laying your barcode on the palm of your hand (and then do the same with your finish token). The scanning app uses the camera in the volunteers mobile phone to detect the barcode so by having it flat on your palm the camera can focus on it better rather than potentially the ground behind it!

Of course once finished (or if you don't have/want your barcode to be scanned) can you please always return our finish tokens to the bucket next to the scanning volunteer so we have them to use for the next parkrun. Thank you!

Volunteers

Thanks again to those parkrunners that volunteered this week. We need more due the changes as a result of the impact of COVID-!9. All our scanners and the timer are required to use the updated parkrun Virtual Volunteer app on their own phones. It's easy to use and works a lot more smoothly than the older system!
