Karkarook parkrun- Meet your fellow Karkies – 8 September 2021

Thanks to Natalie for another great interview in our “Meet your fellow Karkies” series.

In this edition, Natalie speaks to Michael and Pam Sutton.

When was your first parkrun?

The very first at Karkarook 5/11/16

How did you find out about parkrun?

There was an article in the local paper, The Moorabbin Standard (or was it the Glen Eira Leader?)

Why did you first go to parkrun and did you go on your own or were invited by a friend or relative?

We had done a few fun runs over the years until my arthritis made running impossible. After seeing the newspaper article Pam thought a local fun run would be good to have a go in. I went along to support her and take a few photos. Anita was our first Event Director; she saw me taking the photos and asked if I could put them on Facebook and come along when Pam was running and be the official photographer. And the Rest is History!

What were your first impressions or thoughts when you arrived at your first parkrun?

It was a very festive occasion, a few speeches and a big cake to celebrate.

How many different parkruns have you been to, if more than Karkarook?

I have only been to Karki, Pam has also done Shepparton. We have been waiting to go to Coburg where our daughter and son-in-law regularly run, until the lockdowns over the last 18 months keep foiling those plans.

What is your favourite parkrun and why?

Can only say Karki.

What is your favourite memory from parkrun?

There are so many highlights. The 3rd Birthday run on 2/11/19 was a great day, our daughter and family came and ran, I was the tail walker.

What do you like most about parkrun?

The friendly atmosphere, the location, we live 2 kilometres from Karki and I often go there for a walk.

Are you a walker, jogger, runner or a mixture depending on your mood?

Pam mainly runs, Mike is a walker.

What other activities do you do?

Pam plays netball and collects antique writing equipment. Mike is a keen yacht racer at RMYS and collects woodworking tools. We are both members of the Furniture History Society of Australia and have been cross country skiers for many years at Lake Mountain and downhill skiers at Mt Hotham and the Italian Dolomite Mountains.

What is your current favourite TV show or movie? - i.e: looking for recommendations for all of us in lockdown.

The Crown, Downtown Abbey, Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell, Midsomer Murders etc.
