EVENT #361: RETURN OF THE JEDI … I MEAN JUMP SHOT
There are many well known pairs in life: Salt + Pepper, Bert + Ernie, Bacon + Eggs, Jon Liggitt + Jumpshots. It’s really quite an amazing phenomenon to watch. Jon doesn’t shout out in preparation. He doesn’t manoeuvre his subjects for the perfect angle. He simply raises his camera, focuses on the target, and then an unexplained magic raises parkrunners high into the air. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen this before at other parkruns, but never to this overwhelming extent. Jon returned to Highlands this week, and you only have to look at his photographs to observe his wizardy at work. He is an artist and we are blessed to have him volunteer his skills and experience to our community.
The parkrun jump: verb, to leap, to propel oneself through the air, along a forwards trajectory, in a show of enjoyment. So in a time of Covid safety, where fist pumps and high fives, hugs and PB bells are temporarily on hold, parkrun jumpshots are the new symbol of “I’m loving parkrun”. So give it a try. Height is irrelevant to the quality of your jump form. All that is required is to push yourself off the surface, and get air (however small) between your feet and the ground … and don’t forget to SMILE!
Today Saturday 23rd January 2021 there were 158 participants completing laps of the lake. Any early concern of fog or cloud was quickly blown away as the sun shone down upon us all. And while we appreciated the Victorian Summer finally starting, I don’t know how many participants appreciated the lack of any breeze whatsoever. While Highlands is lucky to have re-opened, not all courses have re-commenced, so please check individual event web or facebook pages before you attend.
After Saturday’s event we are missing two finish tokens. If in the excitement of finishing 5km you accidentally took one home, you didn’t understand the process, or maybe it has now gone through the wash in your pocket, that is completely understandable. We don’t mind. But if you have token 37 or 57 could you please let us know and return them to us, so they can be put back in action next weekend.
Although we need to keep our briefings ‘brief’, we still recognise and celebrate your milestones.
Ninka COOK started parkrun at Highlands in January 2015. She has completed all parkruns, except one tourist event at Mallards Pike parkrun, with us at Highlands. Ninka has brought her PB down from 46:05min to 30:19min, and we have no doubt you will smash through 30min very soon. Ninka joined the 50th parkrun club by running with her friend Stacey. Well done Ninka.
Tracey CHRISTINA started parkrun at Highlands in October 2013, and while today she achieved an unofficial milestone of 150, we love your enthusiasm with your personalised tshirt and balloons.
There are a few milestones coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned. Duncan HALL will be achieving superstar ‘250’ status next week, and whether it is here or Maribyrnong or one of your other regular courses we wish you congratulations.
Congratulations to the following Highlanders who achieved a personal best. Whether it was one second, or one minute, you have performed the best you have ever been capable of. That is huge. Go you! OUT AND ABOUT
Congratulations to all the Highanders who completed Two Bays last Sunday. The trail run, which is 28km (or return 56km) from Dromana to Cape Schanck, would have been incredibly testing, so well done: Rita BUSUTTIL, Sarah DAKOS, Stefanie KILNER, Carly ANTONELLO, Harminder SINGH, David MALONEY (and anyone else I missed). Well done to Lee BOVA who completed the Alpine Classic 200km (just about) ride which covers Mt Buffalo, Falls Creek and a return trip over Tawonga Gap. You are the stuff of legend. And a shout out to all the other Highlanders who ventured near and afar to try out other parkrun events. There really is something special to seeing how other events are so similar, and yet completely awesome in other ways – be it trails, out and back, ocean, rivers, hills.
Also, in case you havn’t heard, parkrun Australia congratulated Lauren REID for running a new female parkrun world record!! Yes – WORLD RECORD. Lauren ran 15:45min on the warm morning at Parramatta parkrun on Saturday. What a huge effort.
UPCOMING (not parkrun) EVENTS
With the fluid nature of COVID restrictions it is difficult to guarantee any event will run in its original form, or even run at all. Some have altered the starting procedures, some have significantly capped entry numbers or cut off dates. However these are a few events you can pencil into your diaries if you are interested in furthering your fitness ‘journey’ (most overused word of 2020).
Sole Motive Sunset Series: 3rd Feb, 17th Feb, 3rd Mar.
Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run: 13th Feb.
Sandy Point Half Marathon: 28th Feb.
Run the Rock (Hanging Rock): 17th April.
Okeefe Challenge: 2nd May (frustratingly on the same day as …)
Werribee Mansion Run: 2nd May.
We are grateful every week for the Highlanders who volunteer for any role, to provide a wonderful event to you. Your time and effort is much appreciated. Thankyou to the following volunteers who made this weeks event happen: Annemarie HOLMYARD • Annie GRAHAM • Aradhana SINGH • Carly ANTONELLO • Darren SANFORD • Di HINE • Harminder SINGH • Jack HEALEY • Jon LIGGITT • Mary WHALAN • Rita BUSUTTIL • Sahez H SINGH • Sarah DAKOS • Susan PALMER
Since we have just started back there are a lot of opportunities to volunteer in various roles in the upcoming weeks. We encourage everyone to have a turn volunteering to fulfil the different parkrun roles. You can either fill out the paper roster at the barcode scanning table, email email@example.com or drop a line to the facebook page ‘Highlands parkrun’. The roles are simple and we will happily show you the ropes when you come along.
THAT’S ALL FOLKS
That is it for this week’s run report, brought to you by Kat Mc. We hope you can join us at Highlands parkrun for our third parkrun of the year. Harminder SINGH will be your Run Director along with a fantastic team of volunteers. It’s also PACER WEEK so get excited!!
