Highlands parkrun is cancelled on 2021-09-25 – Due to current COVID-19 restrictions

COVID-19 Special Update

Two parkrun volunteers wearing facemasks

In the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19 restrictions, we are asking all parkrunners to check their local conditions before leaving for parkrun this weekend.

If you have visited the Greater Brisbane area recently, please have a COVID test as soon as possible.

HIGHLANDS EVENT #362 – WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

HIGHLANDS EVENT #362 – WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

The weather was cold and gloomy. The holidays had finished. It was our third week back. Suffice to say the golden shine of parkrun and the prevailing motivation to attend could have slightly dimmed. So nothing could make me happier than scrolling to find todays total attendance. Week 1 – 155 participants, Week 2 – 158 participants, Week 3 – 185 participants! That is our 10th BEST attendance EVER, in the history of Highlands parkrun. It is also double our weekly average. So well done you. Great work climbing out of bed. Magnificent effort putting aside any excuses. Good job, well, getting the job done. It also couldn’t help but notice that jumpshots are spreading like wildfire - extra points for creativity, pairs, dogs, and children!

SM JUMP

Looking at today’s results, Marcel SAYHOUNE is back in fine form, being our first male finisher for all of our 2021 events, and finishing only 3 seconds off his PB. But I feel like Marcel is looking for a bit of a challenge. After all, we all like a pacer in front of us, to push us a little harder. So if you know anyone who might have a crack at 18min, bring them along. Perhaps we can also have a go at smashing Highlands long held record of 16:36min at the same time. Given that our 3rd finisher was a FIRST TIMER to parkrun, I think Mathew YANEZ also has a fighting chance of making it interesting in the upcoming weeks. Well done to Susan PALMER for flying through as first female finisher.

SM DONE

MILESTONES: We have seen your accomplishment and want to shout CONGRATULATIONS from the rooftops -

Stipan RUZICKA (50): This was Stipan’s 2nd run at Highlands, so we take it as an honor that you chose to celebrate your 50th milestone with us. Stipan hails from Warragul parkrun, and has also visited Mansfield parkrun. What better way to commemorate your milestone than a PB. Well done.

Duncan HALL (250): Having visited 26 different parkruns, it was always questionable about where Duncan would choose to achieve superstar 250 status. So we couldn’t be prouder that you returned to Highlands to achieve this milestone. Duncan has been a huge part of the parkrun community, having also achieved his volunteer milestone, but we cant wait to see you in your new green shirt!

MILESTONE

PERSONAL BESTS: “You get a PB, you get a PB, Everybody gets a PB”. Ok sorry, not everybody, 24 people (but 1 in 7 is pretty good odds if you think about it). So take a big breath when reading the following list of a PB achievers: Chris CAMILLERI (20:16) - Matthew PLATT (21:49) - Emmanuel LAPUS (22:10) - Tim GLEW (22:30) - Brett DUNSTAN (23:08) - Rakesh KUMAR (25:11) - Stipan RUZICKA (25:14) - Simon ROBINSON (26:45) - Eli KELADA (29:08) - Christopher ROBINSON (30:37) - Tanya KELADA (30:48) - Bilal SHUJA (31:03) - Lisa VOCALE (31:18) - Jensen FURNELL (31:55) - Mathew ROBINSON (33:18) - Arnel LAPUS (34:49) - Evan CARSTAIRS (35:13) - Yenfen HSIEH (35:46) - Pelin OZTURK (36:19) - Jodie YOUNG (42:17) - Laura DWYER (43:09) - Campbell PASCOE (44:49) - Henry PASCOE (44:54) - John TINLINE (1:07:07). Well done, enjoy your moment of awesomeness.

SM J 3

FIRST TIMERS: We love seeing new faces, and scanning new barcodes. So a big shout out to this weeks FIRST TIMERS to parkrun: Mathew YANEZ - Adam ROBERTS - Adam GRASSO - Alejandro YANEZ - Antonio TSATSIADIS - Mason ATKINSON - Mehmet Ali DOGANAY - Monique ARONICA - Claudia YANEZ - Tony VASILIOU - Stephanie VASILIOU - Rhiannon ATKINSON - Pamela VASILIOU - Angela VASILIOU. Did you love it? We do. There is no time like the present to visit Highlands from other courses, so a big warm welcome also goes to this weeks FIRST TIMERS to Highlands: Jaye HALL - Glenn HALUPKA - Katrina MATTHEWS - Lorraine CAIRNS - Andrew BOSCO - Michelle MCCULLOCH. We hope you enjoyed the fresh lake breeze.

UPCOMING (not parkrun) EVENTS: Here are a few events you can pencil into your diaries.

Sole Motive Sunset Series: 3rd Feb, 17th Feb, 3rd Mar.

Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run: 13th Feb.

Sandy Point Half Marathon: 28th Feb.

Run the Rock (Hanging Rock): 17th April.

Okeefe Challenge: 2nd May (frustratingly on the same day as …)

Werribee Mansion Run: 2nd May.

VOLUNTEERS: parkrun can only run through the hard work of volunteers. Thankyou to this weeks heroes: Ann ANDREWS, Peter ANDREWS, Carly ANTONELLO, Rita BUSUTTIL, Danielle CHERUBIN, Sarah DAKOS, Dana HODSON, Hayley LOFTUS, Dezyre PAITI, Sally PETER, Harminder SINGH, Jack WOOLDRIDGE.

Since we have just started back there are a lot of opportunities to volunteer in various roles in the upcoming weeks. We encourage everyone to have a turn volunteering to fulfil the different parkrun roles. You can either fill out the paper roster at the barcode scanning table, email highlandshelpers@parkrun.com or drop a line to the facebook page ‘Highlands parkrun’. The roles are simple and we will happily show you the ropes when you come along.

EVENT #361: RETURN OF THE JEDI … I MEAN JUMP SHOT

EVENT #361: RETURN OF THE JEDI … I MEAN JUMP SHOT

There are many well known pairs in life: Salt + Pepper, Bert + Ernie, Bacon + Eggs, Jon Liggitt + Jumpshots. It’s really quite an amazing phenomenon to watch. Jon doesn’t shout out in preparation. He doesn’t manoeuvre his subjects for the perfect angle. He simply raises his camera, focuses on the target, and then an unexplained magic raises parkrunners high into the air. Don’t get me wrong, I have seen this before at other parkruns, but never to this overwhelming extent. Jon returned to Highlands this week, and you only have to look at his photographs to observe his wizardy at work. He is an artist and we are blessed to have him volunteer his skills and experience to our community.

SM JUMP

The parkrun jump: verb, to leap, to propel oneself through the air, along a forwards trajectory, in a show of enjoyment. So in a time of Covid safety, where fist pumps and high fives, hugs and PB bells are temporarily on hold, parkrun jumpshots are the new symbol of “I’m loving parkrun”. So give it a try. Height is irrelevant to the quality of your jump form. All that is required is to push yourself off the surface, and get air (however small) between your feet and the ground … and don’t forget to SMILE!

SM 140293518_3265194036919745_8527003825999276562_o

Today Saturday 23rd January 2021 there were 158 participants completing laps of the lake. Any early concern of fog or cloud was quickly blown away as the sun shone down upon us all. And while we appreciated the Victorian Summer finally starting, I don’t know how many participants appreciated the lack of any breeze whatsoever. While Highlands is lucky to have re-opened, not all courses have re-commenced, so please check individual event web or facebook pages before you attend.

After Saturday’s event we are missing two finish tokens. If in the excitement of finishing 5km you accidentally took one home, you didn’t understand the process, or maybe it has now gone through the wash in your pocket, that is completely understandable. We don’t mind. But if you have token 37 or 57 could you please let us know and return them to us, so they can be put back in action next weekend.

MILESTONES

Although we need to keep our briefings ‘brief’, we still recognise and celebrate your milestones.

Ninka COOK started parkrun at Highlands in January 2015. She has completed all parkruns, except one tourist event at Mallards Pike parkrun, with us at Highlands. Ninka has brought her PB down from 46:05min to 30:19min, and we have no doubt you will smash through 30min very soon. Ninka joined the 50th parkrun club by running with her friend Stacey. Well done Ninka.

Tracey CHRISTINA started parkrun at Highlands in October 2013, and while today she achieved an unofficial milestone of 150, we love your enthusiasm with your personalised tshirt and balloons.

There are a few milestones coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned. Duncan HALL will be achieving superstar ‘250’ status next week, and whether it is here or Maribyrnong or one of your other regular courses we wish you congratulations.

FIRST TIMERS & TRAVELLERS

Can you believe it? We had 14 first timers at Highlands this week. What a ripper! So welcome to the newest members of our parkrun community: Emmanuel LAPUS • David FURNELL • James VELLA • Martin SEARLE • Senel YILMAZ • Bilal SHUJA • Jensen FURNELL • Christopher STEVENS • Arnel LAPUS • Kylie GROOM • Anna CACAKIOS • Katelyn THORNE • Brendan THORNE • John TINLINE. OUT AND ABOUT

Congratulations to all the Highanders who completed Two Bays last Sunday. The trail run, which is 28km (or return 56km) from Dromana to Cape Schanck, would have been incredibly testing, so well done: Rita BUSUTTIL, Sarah DAKOS, Stefanie KILNER, Carly ANTONELLO, Harminder SINGH, David MALONEY (and anyone else I missed). Well done to Lee BOVA who completed the Alpine Classic 200km (just about) ride which covers Mt Buffalo, Falls Creek and a return trip over Tawonga Gap. You are the stuff of legend. And a shout out to all the other Highlanders who ventured near and afar to try out other parkrun events. There really is something special to seeing how other events are so similar, and yet completely awesome in other ways – be it trails, out and back, ocean, rivers, hills.

Also, in case you havn’t heard, parkrun Australia congratulated Lauren REID for running a new female parkrun world record!! Yes – WORLD RECORD. Lauren ran 15:45min on the warm morning at Parramatta parkrun on Saturday. What a huge effort.

UPCOMING (not parkrun) EVENTS

Some have altered the starting procedures, some have significantly capped entry numbers or cut off dates. HIGHLANDS EVENT REPORT #360

HIGHLANDS EVENT #360 - BACK TO SCHOOL

Do you remember the first day back at school after the holidays? That mixture of excitement and anxiety. Worried if you would remember everyone’s names. Some people out of their routine, struggled to get up early. Some showing off runners they got for Christmas, or their flash new haircut. Then it starts. You put one foot in front of the other. You see everyone’s happy faces and your morning concerns float away.

Well, you could be forgiven for having some of those feelings today. It is a big deal. You have been part of history. ‘Do you remember the year that parkrun had to stop due to COVID?’. In March 2020 Highlands parkrun, along with parkruns around the world, made the tough announcement that parkrun would stop running for the foreseeable future. No one could imagine the lockdown that Victorians would face, or how long the cancellations would continue. It was a hard time for everyone. In fact, we still need to spare a thought for parkrun events worldwide that continue to be closed.

So to our Highlanders community – welcome back. Thankyou for helping us stay COVID-safe, by filling in the QR codes, holding back the high fives and handshakes, and keeping a safe distance. Today was a momentous day and we are so happy that we could share it with you.

PARKRUN SM

EVENT #360

Yes you heard it right – 360! There is so much symbolism behind that number. “A single spin which results in the return to the original orientation”. We have done a full 360 since 2020 and we are back! Today, Saturday 16th January 2021, we had 155 participants running laps of the lake. The cool weather didn’t deter our enthusiasm. It was a huge weekend for the Victorian parkrun events that re-opened, by comparison - Albert Park (386 participants), Lalor (42), and Maribyrnong (290). Just be aware that if you are 'touristing' this holidays, not all parkruns have re-commenced to ensure they are COVID safe compliant, so make sure you check out their event webpage or individual facebook page before you attend.

PUPPIES Sm

MILESTONES

It has been tough for parkrunners nearing a milestone. To come so close only to have to wait patiently for 10 months, demonstrates your love of parkrun. So congratulations to this weeks milestone: Peyton MCDONALD (Junior 10): Peyton has done all 10 parkruns with us at Highlands and has consistency brought their best time down from 1hour to 42mins. Looking forward to seeing you in your white 10 tshirt. There are a few milestones coming up in the next few weeks so stay tuned.

PERSONAL BESTS

After almost a year away from parkrun, and restrictions on outdoor activity, fitness levels would be expected to be slightly diminished. But the following superstars have found the motivation to exceed their previous form and smash their PBs. Hats off to you – Michael STAHL (20:04) • Kade EVANS (21:17) • Chris CAMILLERI (21:53) • Matthew PLATT (22:22) • Tod METZ (22:35) • Jason EVANS (24:06) • Lwin TINT (26:46) • Lachlan MCKERNAN (34:23) • Lily MCKERNAN (38:29) • Matt DERKS (43:08). Unfortunately you couldn’t ring the bell loud across the lake, but we still recognize and celebrate your achievement with you.

FIRST TIMERS & TRAVELLERS

Welcome to all our first timers and first time travelers to Highlands parkrun: Jack GREIG, Brian DEVLIN, Brett DUNSTAN, Brea DAVIS, Stipan RUZICKA, Lisa VOCALE, Mila Ludvica DOHM, Aydin UKUR, Kylie ROBERTSON, Andrew GORE, Lisa TEMEL, Chloe SAYER, Jodie YOUNG, Pelin OZTURK, Sibella DROWLEY. We cant wait to see you again next time.

OUT AND ABOUT

Generally I would be bragging about all the amazing events Highlanders have been participating in over Summer. Many of you remained active through the weekly (not) parkrun, 5k your way. The odd person has been lucky to participate in a parkrun or running event in another state. Overall though it has been a difficult time with most running events being cancelled or postponed due to COVID restrictions.

But if there was one activity that I could draw your attention to it would be the several Highlanders, including Lee BOVA and Dave MALONEY, who ran phenomenal distances in honor of the four Victoria Police members who were tragically killed on April 22, 2020. Lee dedicated four runs on four consecutive Sundays in May 2020, totaling 159.485km, with each distance representing the registered numbers of the fallen members. Dave completed one run of over 100km in one day, passing each of the police stations of the fallen members (including South Melbourne, Melbourne East, St Kilda Road, The Police Academy, and the Police Memorial). Along with other Highlanders who supported them, or completed their own run in remembrance, these were a touching tribute to Leading Senior Constable Lynette TAYLOR, Senior Constable Kevin KING, Constable Glen HUMPHRIS and Constable Josh PRESTNEY, and also helped raised funds for their grieving families.

PARTICIPANTS

Today (23rd Nov 2019) we had a total of 143 runners, walkers and joggers completing laps of our stunning course around the lake (with 66 males and 77 female). What an absolute stunner it was. It was 14 degrees by 8am and there wasn’t a single breeze to bother the windmill. By comparison, Kangaroo Island had 19 participants, Albert Park had 558 participants, and Bushy Park had 1328 participants.
