This week we will announce the February parkrunner of the month. Did you volunteer in February – it could be you!

Safety

A HUGE thank-you to you all for taking extra special care when running this week after my announcement about keeping left.

We don’t like to have to tell people off, but safety is very important, we do not want to see anyone hurt.

Remember it is important to keep left at all times, and when overtaking make sure that no one is coming from the other direction, and that you will not obstruct anyone else’s run.

New to the club

Congratulations to Xanthe Kuskey and Kev Hill who both ran their 50th run last week.

Volunteers make parkrun happen. Anyone can volunteer. It is easy to volunteer:

• First, check out the gaps in the volunteer roster for coming weeks at Future Roster.

• Second, e-mail the date you can help and any preference for volunteer role to coomeraoffice@parkrun.com.

• Alternatively, place your name on the clipboard when you check in after your parkrun on a Saturday morning.

We ask that each parkrunner fulfills a volunteer role at least 3 times a year. Volunteering is central to the parkrun experience. You will have a great time, meet many great people and look forward to your next parkrun with great anticipation.

Safety Safety Safety

The safety of you and other park users is our main priority.

As many of you may have seen, I stopped running for a bit on Saturday as it was clear that there were many runners that were not staying left and I was concerned for your safety.

Please always allow some room for people walking or running in the opposite direction to parkrun and do not force others off the track.

Please recognise that most people run at a fairly consistent pace and that the field tends to spread out evenly by the time we hit Rose Valley Drive near the shops. This means that the further people are around the course, the less likely they are to expect to be overtaken. If, for whatever reason, you have been delayed or had to stop, don't expect to surge back through the field in the latter part of the run.

Here are some practical suggestions:

  • if running solo always stay to the left of the path;
  • if running with friends, split into couples. Don't hog the path, 3 abreast;
  • if you overtake a single runner try to run the middle of the track BUT when you overtake make sure no-one is coming from the other direction – if so, you must give way to oncoming traffic first;
  • if you are running with a single baby pusher or dog on a lead, it may be wise to let all runners and walkers know in advance when you are about to overtake to avoid legs tangling with wheels or leads;
  • if you are participating with a double pusher or exuberant dog, you may like to consider enjoying your parkrun with a gentle stroll for additional safety and comfort of everyone;
  • Even if the path is crowded we ask that people DO NOT run own the road; and
  • Can I also ask that parents with junior runners appropriately seed themselves at the start line. It’s great to get to the bridge first, however if you can’t keep up the pace, and have to stop suddenly, this is a huge safety risk especially when people are running closely behind you.

Above all, remember that parkrun is a run not a race. As our numbers have grown, our runners have come to expect that they will be running in a crowd. Unless you plan on being very quick you will probably be held up at least a little by the crowd. Enjoy yourself and get to know your fellow runners.

New to the club

Congratulations to Madison Cacciola who ran her 10th run this week.

Remember without the help of you, the parkrunners, parkrun can not operate. Each time you volunteer you automatically receive 100 points to your total in the points competition (up to a max of 3). Volunteering really does show you the other side to parkrun. We encourage everyone to sign up regularly; just 3 or 4 times a year keeps us going every week.

Those who have volunteered 25 times are eligible to order their own volunteer t-shirt. This recognises the amazing effort many put in to keeping parkrun going.

Multisport Gold are going to take over

On 5 March Alli and her Multisport Gold crew will be taking over control of Coomera parkrun. If you train with Alli and would like to help, please see her and put your hand up for a volunteer position.

This should be an awesome morning and we will be heading to our friends at Cafe Two afterwards for coffee and breakfast.

Wear your Milestone

shirts

This Saturday, we’ve put the call out for all runners to brag and show their colours by wearing their milestone shirt.

Whether you’re a junior runner who’s ran 10 runs or you’ve reached your 50th (red) or 100th run (black), or volunteered 25 times (purple) we’d like to see a sea of proud white, red, black and purple runners on the course.

Thank-you Volunteers

Thank-you to this week’s volunteers Alex, Amanda, Julie, Matthew, Narelle and Xanthe.

Remember that Volunteers make parkrun happen. Anyone can volunteer. It is easy to volunteer:

• First, check out the gaps in the volunteer roster for coming weeks on our website.

• Second, e-mail the date you can help and any preference for volunteer role to coomeraoffice@parkrun.com.

• Alternatively, place your name on the clipboard when you check in after your parkrun on a Saturday morning.

Each parkrunner fulfills a volunteer role at least 3 times a year. If you come irregularly – aim for around 1 volunteering effort for every 8 parkruns.

Volunteering is central to the parkrun experience. You will have a great time, meet many great people and look forward to your next parkrun with great anticipation.

New to the club

Congratulations to Ann Pinnock who ran her 50th run this week. Well done to our junior runners, Piper Williams and Charlotte Brown who ran their 10th run.

Coomera on tour

The next "Coomera parkrun on tour" will be to Tamborine Mountain for their 1st Birthday anniversary on Saturday 30th January. Certainly well worth doing this one! People that want to carpool should meet at Coomera parkrun and depart at 6:15am. The drive is about 25-30 minutes. Please let any of our Run Directors know if you’d like to carpool.

Personal bests

Congratualtions to the following athletes that scored a PB this week.

Safety reminder

Our first consideration is to other park users. Runners, walkers, dogs, and wildlife all share the marvelous lake and surrounds.

Please always allow some room for people walking or running in the opposite direction to parkrun and do not force others off the track. Where the course narrows, we suggest you run single file.

Please recognise that most people run at a fairly consistent pace and that the field tends to spread out evenly around the course. This means that the further people are around the course, the less likely they are to expect to be overtaken. If, for whatever reason, you have been delayed or had to stop, don't expect to surge back through the field in the latter part of the run.

Here are some practical suggestions:

• if running solo always stay to the left of the path;

• if running with friends, split into couples. Don't hog the path;

• if you overtake a single runner try to run the middle of the track;

• if you pass a couple make sure no-one is coming the other direction – if so, you must give way to oncoming traffic first;

• if you are running with a single stroller or dog on a lead, it may be wise to let all runners and walkers know in advance when you are about to overtake to avoid legs tangling with wheels or leads;

• avoid overtaking parkrunners on the bridge before the finish line. We wouldn't want a crash or tumble involving runners.

Above all, remember that parkrun is a run not a race. As our numbers have grown, our runners have come to expect that they will be running in a crowd. Unless you plan on being very quick you will probably be held up at least a little by the crowd. Enjoy yourself and get to know your fellow runners.
