Event #81 Blackbutt: Pure Love

The air was heavy with clouds, not of the meteorological but entomological kind. We are reliably informed that there are over 55 mosquito species recorded in the greater Lower Hunter and Mid-North Coast region. At Blackbutt, chances are we have every single one of those species, each one in their thousands!

Despite this, and the substantial challenges of hills AND humidity, 156 enthusiastic runners fronted up at the Pure Performance Sports start line for Event #81, ably supported by a swarm of dedicated volunteers.

156 runners trying to outrun the Blackbutt mozzies

This week we were pleased to award our January parkrunner of the month to Robert Hoare. Fittingly, Robert was volunteering this week as photographer. He has run 54 parkruns in total, all but two of them right here at Blackbutt. Robert has improved his time at Blackbutt by 50 seconds, and is a great promoter of #dfyb. Most pictures of Robert taken at Blackbutt show him proudly holding up his laminated barcode. Congratulations Robert!

Wooter club runner and parkrun diehard Maddy Herbert today became a Region of Runners 'Regionnaire', meaning she has completed every one of the ten RoR (Region of Runners) parkruns at least once. Congratulations Maddy!

Another milestone was Corey Newman shaving an astounding 21 seconds off her PB, set last week. Apparently, on parkrun eve this week, Corey gave herself a good talking to! It seems to have worked. Well done Corey.

Event #79 Just a few shirts and an Aussie or two

Last Saturday saw one of our largest crowds to date with 183 runners tackling the wonderful hills of the Butt and the temporary renaming of the burn to Ayres Rock.  All runners loved being able to run passed the coat of arms and sweat up a storm with a massive 25 registered PBs and a whopping 21 first timers.  Welcome to the Butt!!!

It was with great honour that I was able to be the run director to celebrate one of our Event Directors 50th run!!! Well done Jodie.

We also celebrated another junior reach his 10th run with William Jeayes knocking this up.

Plus we also had 2 presentations of 100 shirts to Anne Marie Close and Dylan Cross.  Awesome effort guys!!!! It also should be noted that Sam Cross (pictured on the right in the pram) has run every parkrun with Dylan so a big shout out to Sam with an honorary 100th run.

Great effort everyone again and thanks to everyone who volllied this week and to those who have put their names down for the coming weeks.  We have now gone two weeks now with people filling the roster for the next week on the day.  Keep it up everyone and remember to volunteer at least three times a year to keep this wonderful event continuing,

Event #75 – New Year’s Day Triple Treat: Strawberry edition and parkrun rap

Proceedings kicked off with Andrew Dodd whipping the crowd into a frenzy, reminding them that the New Year's Day run was the strawberry edition in the Region of Runners Triple Treat. Vanilla had already been consumed at Lake Mac, and chocolate was waiting at Newy.

With the help of her two backing singers, Cory Newman then entertained us with a parkrun rap, and we knew the day was going to be something special. Less than an hour later, a non-launch record field of 226 enthusiastic runners had crossed the finish line on our once-a-year, 160 metre elevation gain 'Butt Blaster'course.

One in seven finishers were five30runners. They sure know how to have fun!

None of it can happen without our amazing volunteers. Some of them left before we could take their photo, as they headed in to Newy to complete the chocolate edition of the Region of Runners New Year's Day 'Triple Treat'.

Event #72 – Canada eh?

Every week we ask whether there are any visitors from outside the Region of Runners. On Saturday, when that question was posed, a hand shot up. "Where are you from?"...... 'CANADA!" was the response, followed by an enthusiastic round of applause from the 71 other Blackbutt loyals.

Why isn't there a parkrun back home in Canada?

Karen Weller is a member of the Comox Valley Runners club on Vancouver Island, British Colombia. After the run she was sharing her thoughts on her parkrun experience. Karen is motivated to get parkrun off the ground in her home country! Special mention goes to Tom Davison, who turned up on Saturday offering his services as an extra volunteer. We gave Tom the challenge of setting himself a goal on the number of volunteers he could recruit. Tom set out to rope in six volunteers but managed to find nine! Congrats Tom, we love your work.

Suzanne Macqueen - Blackbutt parkrunner of the month for November

Our parkrunner of the month was Suzanne Macqueen. Suzanne volunteered once in November, ran 4 times AND improved her time by 1 min 17 sec during the month. Not only that, but Suzanne has improved her overall time by more than 9 mins since starting running at Blackbutt. Thanks Suzanne! We hope you like the singlet.

Our volunteers did an outstanding job as usual. If you haven't yet tried it, give volunteering a go. Our vollies always seem to have a huge smile when we ask them to pose after each week's run. It's loads of fun and very rewarding.

Blackbutt parkrun #69 – don’t forget the Aeroguard!

One hundred and twenty runners, eleven volunteers and 47 million mozzies can't be wrong! Blackbutt is THE place to be on a Saturday morning.

Searing temperatures on Friday did nothing to deter either the runners or the mozzies from turning up for Blackbutt parkrun #69, and despite the hordes of winged beasts and high humidity, 21 of 120 runners set personal bests. Seventeen parkrunners completed Blackbutt parkrun for the first time, including one visitor from Westerfolds parkrun (Melbourne) who felt right at home on our hills.

We have been reliably informed that mosquitoes are only capable of speeds of 2.5km/h. Therefore, even our slowest walkers are capable of outpacing the bloodsuckers! Perhaps this snake was a little slow? Next week....remember the aeroguard!!

We would like to thank these amazing volunteers - without you parkrun cannot happen!

Blackbutt parkrun #65 – turn up the heat

Another fine Saturday morning greeted the prospective runners, but this week it had a bite, and we're not talking about mozzies!

By 8am, 111 enthusiastic and hardy runners were gathered at the start line for their weekly pilgrimage over the Butt's unrelenting hills. And despite the humidity and unseasonably high temperature, most were smiling as they crossed the finish line. Was it a smile of accomplishment or relief?

Looks like relief to me!

Some of our regulars like to compare barcodes after the run!

As always, we'd like to acknowledge our amazing volunteers. Without them, parkrun simply doesn't happen.

Event #57 Spring is near….butt

Another wet and slightly windy Saturday had arrived. A Friday afternoon inspection of the course revealed that our grass finish straight had become a swimming lane, so Plan B (wet weather course) was enacted. By the time 8am Saturday had rolled around, 71 hardy souls were at the start line itching for a dose of hill work.

These hardy, rugged, tenacious stalwarts managed 23 personal bests in conditions that were far from ideal. Glen, our intrepid photographer made his way onto Blackbutt's infamous 'Run Like You Stole Something' steeply descending last kilometre to catch our fleet-footed fanatics hurtling for home.

Our volunteers deserve special mention for the way they braved the elements, greeting each runner with a welcoming smile in the rain, even though there was a shelter nearby. What a dedicated bunch they are!

Event #56 Another Beautiful Day At The Butt!

In a day that another parkrun was starting in the region of runner (RoR) at Singelton, we had 104 (second time in a row) loyal runners coming to Blackbutt parkrun. Despite of the last night rain, the course wasn't much slushy and temperature was great.

Today, Ella Goeldner ran her 50th parkrun and she celebrated this great achievement with us at the Butt with a super especial cake baked by Lisa as usual. Goeldner family is one of the most supportive contributors at the Butt who are always ready to help. Thanks guys!

We would like to thank BakerLove Lawyers, our local sponsor, for all their support. They had their stall up again, giving water and sweets to the runners. They also gave two tickets away for the final game of Ice Hockey Skating season through a lucky draw.

Event #47 The Case of the missing tokens

Another fun filled episode of the Butt was run last Saturday in what was one of the coldest days at the Butt.  Even the resident swan was wanting to get in on the action and snuggle with the runners in an effort to stay warm, however there were not many runners willing to snuggle.

In a slightly modified wet course, 109 runners braved the cold and set out to smash out the hills and let the Butt know who's boss.

That was until we reached the mid 70's and realised that a bundle of tokens had gone awol and found a warmer place to hide.  But thanks to our awesome team of volunteers, we ploughed on and enabled our runners to complete without skipping a beat.

Knuckles were exchanged as the search went on......

Again thanks to all our volunteers who helped out and we can't wait to see you all there again this weekend!  Oh and don't stress, we have found them all.

As always...... DON'T FORGET YOUR BARCODE!!!!!

Event #46 The Revenge of the Swan

This week saw 690 water-wrinkled toes carrying their owners around our wet weather course.  Our "good friend" the swan was back this week to honk at us as we wended our way through the rain soaked paths of Blackbutt - even trying to take a piece of run memorabilia from the pants of this weeks Run Director!

The Swan trying to look "cute"...managing "sinister"...

We ran a slightly varied "wet weather" course today, managing to have the start line also be the finish line, but providing our volunteers some much needed shelter whilst the 69 eager parkrunners were out doing what they do best - running and having fun!

Luke BABIC, crossed the finish line in a very respectable 19:03 as first finisher, with all runners across the line in 46:40.

69 slightly waterlogged runners get started from the "wet weather" starting line.
