Berrinba parkrun #142 25/02/2017

With temperatures finally coming down, 194 parkrunners including 20 first timers enjoyed their 5km walk or run this past Saturday.

16996355_1158738167556911_3293076164260765785_n

Starting in the wee hours of the morning, Tammy Hill the RD, Greg Hunt, the photographer, and I- as VC- went around the course to sweep off the pine needles and leaves that had become quite slippery. We're sure that was the reason for the 29 PBs this week- but some may argue it was the rush back to the finish line before the box of Maltesers generously provided by parkrun tourist, Gary NISBET were all gone!

16864895_1158848454212549_1099353496338566018_n

We had just one milestone reached at Berrinba this weekend- Marlene MCBEAN reached her 100th parkrun. Adam DEGEN also reached his 50th run this week, but this was run at Logan River.

16998158_1158738307556897_5927838492875374465_n

We also managed to snap a pic of John BUGEJA with the 25th volunteer shirt- reached while pacing last week! Good work John!

We really appreciate our volunteers at parkrun. parkrun is run by volunteers and all we need is for each person to volunteer about 3 times a year to ensure everyone gets a chance to run. We've also had/ heard of non- runners who wanted to support runners in their family by volunteering- a wonderful way to turn a morning run into a lovely family morning!

In the coming weeks we have quite a few vacant spots that need fillling. If we can't fill the key positions we may be forced to cancel parkrun! For this reason, if you haven't volunteered before, or haven't in awhile, perhaps now is the time to give it a go!

This week our awesome volunteers were:

Run Director Tammy HILL
Volunteer Coordinator Judy HUNT
Photographer Greg HUNT
Barcode Scanners Michael SWANSON and David HILL
Finish Tokens Lisa BOULTON
Timekeeper Mandi SWANSON
Marshals Katrina TSENG, Tristesse AUGUST and Kevin (and Stanley) BAKER
Tail Runners Amanda HENDREN and Stephanie MARTINI

We have enjoyed another week knowing we have a defib machine at the finish line if needed- thanks to being chosen as part of a grant for the funds. Many of our neighbouring parkruns are still working towards their defibs, so please continue to donate towards this all important piece of equipment as all funds raised are pooled. They're not cheap, but I'm sure you'll agree that if they save someone's life, then they are most certainly priceless!

Saturday saw 9 Run Down Under (RDU) participants turn up in their singlet and pose for a photo- gaining parkrun Australia funds towards starting a parkrun in a disadvantaged area, and putting us in the running for a visit from RDU with cupcakes.

Berrinba parkrun #141 18/02/2017

16683962_1152618464835548_8565198103711883077_n

A beautiful sunrise greeted our wonderful volunteers- some of whom are at Berrinba as early as 5:30am (to do the precourse check)! Thankfully a photo was taken by Ali our RD for the week, to inspire everyone to get up and start their morning right!

And how right it was! Finally some much needed respite from the heat (though only minimal!)- and on pacer week no less- meant a massive 236 runners (including 16 first timers!) managed to score a whopping 33 PBs!

16807654_1152754838155244_5238316764442004940_n

More milestones this week with George Ruch reaching his 50th and Joanne Meier, Mandy Wong and Sandra Seeto all reaching the big 100!

There were also 2 others who achieved milestones on the sly. John Bugeja reached his 25th volunteer by pacing 25minutes and Ezekiel Crawford managed a PB as well as reaching his Junior 10 milestone!

16924056_1416673521710125_1584534209_n

We love recognising your milestones, so please ensure you let us know if you are having one! It's also a wonderful way to encourage your friends who haven't tried parkrun before to come along and 'help celebrate'! Who knows, they may get hooked too!

16830958_1152747541489307_3152934041783978326_n

Many runners may also have glimpsed our very own parkrun couple- Mandy and Jeff- in their bridal finery! This weekend they had a parkrun party not just for Mandy's 100th, but also in preparation for their nuptials in 2 short weeks time! Best of luck guys! We're looking forward to seeing the photos!! (you will be getting married in your running gear, right??)

16807225_1152768164820578_5740304854030866861_n

Unfortunately of late we've had a run of issues relating to the parkrun Under 11 rule. Our RD, Alison Read made a wonderful point in the pre-run briefing that you need to be able to 'high 5' your adult. We ask that all adults please take the time to explain the rules to your under 11 (reminding them it's for their safety!) prior to the morning and then ensure that they remain with you or your chosen adult for the whole 5km. A link to the rules regarding youngsters is: https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/205611412-Can-children-take-part-

16933987_1416673481710129_1459503881_n

Just message or email any time, or speak with a volunteer (in the green and orange vests) on a Saturday morning!

Finally, please don't forget that anyone participating in 'Run Down Under', should wear their singlet this weekend so we can win the cupcakes- I mean, get a great photo and meet other participants! We will be taking the photo just prior to starting the run (so no one misses out and no one has a face that is a colour matching their singlet from pushing themselves!)

Coming up on the 25th of February, the guys at Run Down Under are asking anyone that is participating in RDU this year, to come dressed in their singlet for a group photo. We will aim to do this just prior to starting the run (eg. 6:55am), so please come along on the 25th in your singlet. EVERY person seen photographed in a "parkrun group photo" on February 25th will raise 50 cents to fund a disadvantaged parkrun somewhere in Australia. And……..the parkrun that has the most people in the one photo will receive a visit from Run Down Under (WITH CUPCAKES AND GIVEAWAYS) one day in the near future! What better reason to wear it than for cupcakes?!?

Once again we had a complete volunteer roster this week, however we have a few empty looking weeks coming up, so if you want to give back to your parkrun community before it cools down and runs get faster/ easier, please facebook message, email or speak with a volunteer on the day!

16473081_1141293562634705_1567647258963559461_n

Despite Batman's best efforts, runners and walkers were still met with yet another Saturday morning of steamy conditions for the first run in February! I'm sure we're all looking forward to autumn!
Even with the warm weather, the Berrinba parkrun start line was greeted by 188 keen participants (12 of them first timers!). Of this, 25 even managed PBs- good work!

16508536_1141322339298494_1525558299102686864_n

This week was full of milestones. The crowd was a sea of purple, unicorns and superheroes in celebration. We had Nicole Broadhurst and Alyssa Littler reaching their 100 run milestones and Billie Peers reached his junior 10.

16651791_1401693006541510_730212914_n

We also had the celebration of one of our younger regular parkrunners- Spencer Hodgson- who not only turned 4 on Saturday, but completed his first official parkrun too! Good work and happy birthday Superhero Spencer! Spencer started attending parkrun in late 2015.

16559349_1401432976567513_1778170594_n

We love our juniors getting out and enjoying the parkrun experience, however it is a policy of parkrun that all under 11s must be within arm's reach of a parent, guardian or other designated adult of the parents' choice at our events. This is an insurance requirement and event teams have the authority to remove the results of those who persistently flout this non-negotiable rule.

Further excitement will follow this Saturday with our new defib machine arriving. Our local parkruns are still raising funds for their defibs, so please continue to donate as donations are pooled to help our neighbouring parkruns-

As with every week at parkrun, we truly appreciate the volunteers and their efforts to ensure everyone gets to enjoy a Saturday morning 5km run or walk. Without our volunteers, parkrun would not be able to continue and all it takes is for each person doing a few volunteers each year to make sure everyone gets a run. It's also a wonderful way to get to know your fellow volunteers.

Berrinba parkruns 100th event was celebrated with "bring a plate, bring a mate", we had lots of yummy treats to share at the finish along with two large cakes supplied by the event team. Our youngest member of the event team, Jack Brown made his debut as volunteer coordinator, and did a fabulous job with the pre-run brief.

A big thank you to the fellow parkrunners who helped with the lady who was ill just before the 1st marshal point.

Some amazing things are happening with our parkrunners at the moment!!  Lily Lancaster and Aylssa Littler are off the Regionals (both junior parkrunners); Sunday 1st May, John Shaw competed in Brisbane Road Runners Club half marathon and set a new age record of 1:22:16 for the 60-64 age group, and Adam Shannon competed in the Blackbutt 30/30 Duathlon placing 3rd Male, home in 4hrs and 4mins. Great achievements Gents!
Congratulations to Hayley Delaney and Glen Salter on your engagement last Friday.

Next week is Berrinba's 100th event and we are celebrating with "bring a plate, bring a mate", so drag someone along that has been saying they will start one day, and bring along something yummy to share with your fellow parkrunners. There will be a cake as well and at this stage the coffee van will be on site so stay around after your run or walk and mingle.
