Shepparton parkrun Weekly News – Event #243

International parkrun Day

This weekend we celebrated International parkrun Day - the anniversary of the inaugural Bushy Park Time Trial on Saturday 2nd October 2004. Over the last 14 years, that first event, featuring 13 runners and 5 volunteers, has spawned the now 5 million strong parkrun movement, with over 200,000 parkrunners in attendance around the world every weekend.

The line up at the very first Bushy Park Time Trial in 2004.

parkrun has continued to grow, reaching Australia in April 2011 and our very own Shepparton parkrun in January 2014. There are now over 1,000 events run around the world every weekend, in countries as diverse as Canada, Poland, Malaysia and Namibia. Not bad for a community based on the simple, basic principles formed from the start: weekly, free, 5k, for everyone, forever.

This week at Shepparton we were able to relish a beautiful spring morning for our 180 parkrunners who ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 14 were first timers and 15 recorded new Personal Bests! Representatives of 5 different clubs took part, as we had visitors from all over the country; including Devonport parkrun TAS, West Beach parkrun SA and Bendigo parkrun VIC.

Some of our Shepparton locals were spotted out and about as they toured other parkruns. Sarah Pye made an appearance at Noosa parkrun; Chris, Chelsea and Cadel Nicholson continued their travels at Dubbo parkrun; Chris and Debbie Harvey were spotted at You Yangs parkrun; Rosalie and Larry Smith and family were at Echuca Moama parkrun and Shane Colbert was at Euroa parkrun.
