Run Townsville 2014

Daniel and Shadow are kitted out for June 1st

You may have noticed some fetching scarlet hats being handed out at Riverway parkrun the last couple of weeks. There is a reason for this! Townsville has joined the list of regional cities hosting Run Australia, a series of fun-run events supported by The Cotton On Foundation from which all registration fees go straight back into the local community's health services. In Townsville's case the money will be put to good use by funding the much-needed redevelopment of the Children's Ward at Townsville Hospital. Riverway parkrun is delighted to be able to help support Run Townsville by encouraging as many of you and your friends to sign up!

Run Townsville will take place at Jezzine Barracks on 1st June with a 7am race start and will feature 12km run and 6km run & walk events. Registrations are now open and there are special rates for family regos and kids under 12. There will also be prizes for top placers from 9:15 and all sorts of festivities at Jezzine Barracks include food vendors, music, children's entertainment and market stalls!

We hope to see lots of you there, why not create a parkrun team when you register?

Riverway Event #23

Riverway parkrun, the far bank

Brrrrrr! I don't know about everyone else but this Scozzie was a wee bit cold this morning! That's what happens when you're volunteering and not running to keep warm! As you can see there wasn't a cloud in the sky this morning and our runners were probably enjoying the breeze to keep cool! Yesterday was officially the last day of winter so it's only a matter of time before the humidity starts ramping up as we get stuck into wet season - enjoy it while you can! We had another nice mixture of newbies (and oldies) at Riverway this morning with 7 people attending their first parkrun, we hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Happy parkrunners!

Kaya LAIRD was flying the flag for the parkrun ladies today, first over the line overall with a very respectable time, followed by John DASH and Andrew MAGNER. Andrew not only smashed his own PB but, perhaps even more importantly, has beaten his dad Tony's existing PB to become the fastest parkrunner in the Magner family! Just in time for Fathers' Day, eh? Andrew wasn't the only one, 16 of you scored new personal bests, well done!

Our amazing volunteers

A big thank you to: Nicole BOON, Rachel LIND, Karen, KING, Tim MCKEAN, Hans PREUSS, Patience YOUNG, Meagan BALDWIN and Lisa WILMING for volunteering this week. It was great to have so many of you! We're a bit sparse on next week's volunteer front so far, so please get in touch on the facebook page or e-mail riverwayhelpers@parkrun.com if you can volunteer next week (or other dates in the future)!

Father's Day parkrunner, Adam Boon

Tomorrow is the McDonald's Fathers' Day Fun Run (in conjunction with Townsville Road Runners). The run starts from the Sherriff Park, Love Lane at 7am, Mundingburra, registration commences at 6am, try to be early to avoid the rush. The long course is about 6.8Km and the short course is nearly 3Km. Entry costs are Adults $10 and Children $5 and the charity for this event is Ronald McDonald House.

Finally, on behalf of everyone at Riverway parkrun, I want to wish a "Happy Hundredth!" to our parkrunning friends in the northern hemisphere at Aberdeen parkrun for their 100th parkrun later on today! They've got a fair headstart on us but give us a year and a half and that'll be us! Except warmer, and without the snow. Remember, with your parkrun barcode you can turn up to any parkrun in the world and run!

Time for me to put a sock in it for another Saturday, have a wonderful weekend! See you next week!
