Event #258 – 14 April 2018

event258.14April2018A

From the Run Director

263 is the number for today, 263 clicks of the stopwatch, 263 people starting the weekend in the best possible way.

You may have noticed we had loads of first timers today!!! SEVENTY in fact! You also may have noticed the majority of these were the Cross Country Team from Ormiston College. A big thank you to you all for coming along this morning, I hope you loved your first parkrun as much as we do and will return in the future. Also thanks to their trainer Joel, for organising it.

With the Results today, there were a few barcode scanning issues. If you finished in position 11, please get in touch as the barcode you used came up short in numbers so it wasn't recognised by our scanner.

Also, Edward Connors and Clare Laxy, can you please get in touch with your finish position or time so I can add you in. Your barcodes were scanned but the finish token wasn't so I have no way of knowing where you came in the results to add you in.

MASSIVE THANKS to our volunteers today. We even had a last minute step in volunteer from Grafton, thanks Graeme!!

Ella COOP, Daphne DAY, Cathy DUIGNAN, Tim EDWARDS, Graeme HICKS, Lucy JONES, Jo JONES, Selwyn LAWTON, Ben POTZTAL, Lindsie RICHARDSON, Roanna SANDS

Is anyone heading down to the Gold Run 2018 tomorrow? comment below, share your photos and let us know how you go.

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!!

event257.7April2018A

From the Run Director

SUPER SATURDAY certainly was SUPER! Thanks to all 199 of you who came along to walk, jog, run our beautiful course. Apologies for not asking if we had any tourists in the Run Brief, we had a few all the way from the UK!

Congrats to our new Milestone Club entrants;

Junior 10 Club:  Nicholas POTZTAL, William MASON

50 Club:  Zrinka JOHNSTON, Lea MCGILL - who also achieved a PB, Tony MCGILL

Our parkrunner Of The Month for March was actually a double award:  Margaret and Dave Clodd.
Dave has 8 vols but has only completed 4 parkruns - he originally came along just to support Marg and then got involved volunteering.
Margaret has 52 parkruns (all at Cleveland), 8 vols, 11 PBs and 11.21 improvement!! I think you'll all agree they are certainly worthy of this award. Congrats to you both.
(See our pictures below celebrating all of these great achievements.)

And how awesome were our pacers today!? I had a couple of the pacer volunteers tell me how they were thanked by parkrunners. As an Event Director, that's such a nice thing to hear, we love our volunteers so it's nice to hear they are appreciated by you all.

Thanks to all our volunteers:
Amanda OCONNOR • Cathy DUIGNAN • Dan HALFORD • Denise MARCHANT • Ella COOP • Gerry LOIACONO • Glenda HARRINGTON • Glenn DE SILVA • Jane RANSOM • Judy ROSE • Jules WEAVER • Katherine HAYWARD • Lauren MACNAIR • Linda MEREDITH • Lindsie RICHARDSON • Marshall BROMWICH • Olivia COOP • Peta CLARK • Steve WELLS • Steven HOUGHTON • Tim EDWARDS

Event #256 – 31 March 2018

event 256.31March2018A

From the Run Director

It was great to see all 192 of you running, walking, jogging and shuffling today. We welcomed 24 first timers to our course, including 10 people who completed their first ever parkrun with us today. Well done to you all.

Congratulations to our first finishers on incredible times that just seem to be getting faster each week as we head into the cooler weather. Our first finisher didn't have his barcode printed, so unfortunately his time won't be recorded. Marshall Bromwich therefore was our first official time recorded - 18.42 - crossing the line in second position. Annabel Lee was our first female (7th overall) in 21.08.

There were so many milestones celebrated today by some of our regular parkrunners.
The 50 club welcomed: Tarryn Johnston; Kade and Belinda Diers-Hahn; Michael Tyndall; Grant Trott; John Wright; and Sue Codd.
While it's not an "official" club, one of our former Run Directors, Jules Weaver, completed her 150th parkrun today. In addition to those 150 runs, Jules has also volunteered a staggering 65 times. Wow!
We'd like to recognise every single one of you on these fantastic achievements (see the photos below).

As usual, a huge thanks to our volunteers: Kylie, Chris, Rod, Peta, Cathy, Andrew, Jay, Lindsie and Vivienne. Your help, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Finally, a very Happy Easter to everyone from all of the Cleveland parkrun team. Have an enjoyable long weekend, stay safe and spend some quality time with family and friends.

Cheers!

Event #255 – 24 March 2018

event 255.24March2018A

From the Run Director

It was so good to see all 201 of you that started your weekend at parkrun. Whether you walked / ran / jogged or shuffled the 5kms this morning, you started the weekend right, so well done!

Our speedsters seem to be getting even faster now the weather is becoming cooler. Shayne and Dylan Steenson were the first two finishers, blitzing the male and junior categories, in 18.42 and 19.22 respectively. Donna Dawson was our first female (in 22nd overall) in a fantastic 23.21. Congrats on some amazing times!

A huge thanks to all our awesome volunteers this morning. Russell, Rod, Deb, Peta, Margaret, Claudia, Zrinka, Paul, Chris and Sharon, your assistance is invaluable. (Apologies to Zrinka again for forgetting to thank her this morning).

Welcome to all the first timers who completed our course this morning, including 9 people who were completely new to parkrun, and some tourists from Toowoomba and Lota. A few tourists commented that they achieved PBs, so hopefully we'll see your friendly faces again soon.

Now, onto a serious note: we don't have many rules at parkrun, but the few that we do have, we expect to be followed. This morning, we had a junior running completely by themselves as they couldn't keep up with their parent. As mentioned in the safety briefing, juniors MUST be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian AT ALL TIMES. Our event director actually had to stop her run and walk with the junior to ensure they weren't unaccompanied. As this has happened on previous occasions, unfortunately we will have no choice but to delete both the parent's and the junior's results if the rules aren't followed.

The results have now all been processed and the photos uploaded. Our weekly newsletter will be published to the website mid-week, so keep an eye out for that to keep up-to-date with all things parkrun.

Have a great week and I'll see you all next Saturday.

Cheers!
Carmel - Run Director

This week, we're featuring:  Alison Jones

Alison

What's your Day Job?

Full-time student

parkrun barcode number?

A465547

Why do you first come to parkrun?

I had a goal of running 5km and my PT told me about parkrun.  My first run was at Wynnum (38 something) and I thought I was going to die.  I met Liv, Jacqui, Jules & Amy that day and was keen to become part of Cleveland parkrun when they started it a few weeks later.  I volunteered for the first six weeks to help kick-off the event….and it meant I didn’t have to run!

Your parkrun PB time and which parkrun course was it achieved?

27:30 at Cleveland in June 2016.  I don’t think I will ever beat it!

What made you decide to become a Run Director?

I love everything that parkrun stands for and wanted to play my part in making sure that Cleveland parkrun continued as a friendly, inclusive and encouraging event for the Redlands community

What's your favourite volunteer role and why?

All of them, except finish tokens….they’re slippery little things!  Really, any role that involves talking to people, making them feel welcome, encouraging them, organizing things (sounds a bit like a Run Director!).  Photographer is great too as you get to see the joy, focus, determination, and sometimes the struggles, in people’s faces while you’re editing and uploading the photos.

Fun Fact:

I’m studying at Bachelor of Arts at UQ majoring in Linguistics and Spanish.

I achieved my goal of running 5km and have since run five half marathons.

All of our event team have now been featured, so we'll be on the lookout for more friendly faces to feature in our upcoming weekly newsletters.  If you'd like to be featured in our "personalities of parkrun" section, please contact us and let us know.  We'd love to hear your story.

The slightly cooler temperatures meant even faster than usual times for our speedy runners - and also a large crowd of people, which was so fantastic to see. Congratulations to the 202 of you that welcomed the weekend by running / walking / jogging / shuffling along our beautiful course.

Our first two finishers this morning didn't have their barcodes ☹️ so unfortunately their runs won't be recorded for them. Our first finishers with their barcodes were still incredibly fast: Joshua Yates in 18:40, and Jamie Hiscock (our first female) in 18:41. Well done; fantastic results!

There were lots of achievements this morning that need to be acknowledged:
Firstly, a huge thank you, as always, to our volunteers. We really appreciate the tireless efforts you all make to keep parkrun running (pardon the pun).
Next, welcome to all our tourists and first timers. There were 21 people who came to our course for the first time, some from even as far away as the UK. We hope you all make it back to run/jog/walk with us again soon.
Thirdly, we had 33 people also achieve a PB this morning. Incredible effort!
Lastly - but certainly not least - we celebrated a few milestone as well. Pauline Connors sneakily did her 50th run, and John Wright also did his 50th, but missed the run brief. We'll definitely need photos of you both the next time you're at parkrun. You'll both get an email from parkrun Australia welcoming you to the "50 Club" and receive instructions on how to order your milestone shirt. Cathy Duignan did her 25th volunteer role and now becomes the latest member of the purple shirt brigade (see photos below).

It was great to be back after so long away and see everyone again. Always the best start to the weekend!

Cheers!
Carmel - Run Director
